  2. Just waiting for the commenters to say that the bike shouldn't have been on the pavement (thereby inferring that it was the kid's own fault, and that it's okay for the car to have been there).

Don't they normally not have comments switched on for stories involving injury to people?

The taxi should never have been cycling on the pavement in the first place

Shocking why was the child allowed to cycle on the pavement? Pavements must be kept clear to allow drivers to drive on them, the motor car is king!!

Opps, I can over all EEN

She said: "He really liked going out on his bike but he won't go near it now.

"The brakes don't work and the wheels are buckled anyway."

was knocked off his bike by a white cab

Rest assured that this vehicle can be traced if required. Taxi operators will know.

    rather sadder:

there was also a story yesterday about a 5 year old cycling on his own who was killed in Gullane by a lorry. no report as to where he was.

and the guy who died after some kids tried to steal his bike. the story linked to makes less of the bike theft angle than the one i read yesterday

"Just waiting for the commenters to say that the bike shouldn't have been on the pavement"

    There are some comments now:

    e.g.
"Not very nice, but let this be a lesson to the older cyclists who use their bike on the pavement rather than the road where they should be."

It's OK, s/he preceded the comment with "not very nice, but". I /think/ that makes it OK.

    and:
"I thought it is illegal to cycle on the footway unless it is a designated cylepath?"

It's seems it's illegal, but age of criminal reasonability applies -

On the Gullane story I thought the parents' reported comments were quite touching -

"He loved reading and playing on his computer, and he loved riding his bike. This was the first summer where he was able to have full use of his bike, and he was taken from us doing his favourite thing."
