  1. Anyone advise what may be wrong with my bike? It sounded like a bolt was loose or something tonight, but when I got home I found the noise was whenever I turned the handlebars. It sounds like something is loose inside.

I will take it to the bike shop but they might need a while to fix it. Should it be safe to ride in the meantime?

cracked bearings in the headset? Usually cheap and easy to fix if you have user-servicable bearings. The more you ride on it, the more you are likely to damage the surfaces of the races, making a more difficult, expensive repair lightly.

There really isn't anything inside a headset to work loose without having broken. There is a risk that whatever is rattling about in there could jam the headset making it impossible to steer.

  4. Thanks guys, bearing sounds most likely. I will get it to the bike shop tomorrow, forecast looks horrible anyway.

As well as grinding it was leaking rusty tears, implying a loss of bearing integrity at the very least.
Fortunately when that happened I had already been considering replacing the fork for a while.

  6. Got it back yesterday and it was the lower headset bearings, totally crushed so got a new one fitted. Running nice and smooth today.
