Edinburgh Apps is hosting a road safety 'hackathon' in partnership with Transport for Edinburgh and Streets Ahead over the weekend of 6-8 June.
The workshops will look at how we can develop software to prevent road traffic incidents and make the city safer for residents and visitors. The Hackathon will be of particular interest to software developers and those working with open data, but anyone is welcome to attend.
Since its launch in 2013, Edinburgh Apps has offered people the opportunity to work with Council and other partners to find digital solutions to improve the lives of those living, working and visiting the city. Apps currently in development include NeateBox, which helps visually impaired people navigate pedestrian crossings, and Airts, which timetables the schedule of the Council’s joint storage equipment trucks more efficiently. Find out more about these apps.
    The sessions take place at:
    • Friday 6 June. 7pm-10pm. Appleton Tower, School of Informatics, 11 Crichton Street, University of Edinburgh, EH8 9LE.
    • Saturday 7 June. 9am -7pm. School of Informatics Forum, 10 Crichton Street.
    • Sunday 8 June. 9am-6pm. School of Informatics Forum, 10 Crichton Street.
Admission is free but registration is required - sign up for the event to ensure your place.

I've developed a bit of software in my time, though never a mobile app. But I can't for the life of me imagine what an app would look like that would prevent road incidents.

No incident I've ever been involved in was due to a lack of information on either side. Inattention, selfishness, poor infrastructure and diesel, yes.

I'll be intrigued to see what they come up with.

I wish they would (could?) develop something that used the data Google etc. get from tracking phones' locations, to work out which roads people are speeding on, where people are using rat-runs, where slow-moving users i.e. cyclists/pedestrians are getting bunched up and so on.

The data are used in things like Waze, so it must be accessible.

The council and Police could then target tricky areas for redesign / traffic calming / radar traps / better signage etc.

TomTom sorry for selling driver data to police

"[TomTom] was forced to issue an apology to its customers after a Dutch newspaper revealed that data, including records of the speed driven, had been used to help police set speed traps for motorists."
