I'm doing the Bethany Sportive on Saturday and it looks like it's going to be very wet! All my best chain lube is OK in the dry/showery weather, but the only chain lube I have that's good for really foul weather is Finishline Green, but it makes such a mess it all needs a complete degunking after a ride.

Anyone recommend a good wet-weather lube for a long ride?

    My standard for all Scottish weathers;

If the meteorology turns absurd I also use Phil's Tenacious Oil which looks and flows like golden syrup.*

*Do not be tempted to use actual golden syrup as a lubricant

I have some Juice Lubes Chain Juice (wet weather flavour) from TBC to complement my Finish Line green flavour. It looks identical to Finish Line green flavour. I'll de-gunk my chain* when it gets to 2k miles and gets swapped for its packet-fresh sibling.

*I may not actually get round to doing this, resulting in yet another chain sitting in a yoghurt pot on the kitchen window, though to be fair the previous one never got re-used as it was awaiting the second chain completing its 2k miles, which never happened as that was the drivetrain which suffered a being-wedged-onto-a-freehub error.

I used to use Finish Line Cross-Country but it was too tenacious and gunky. FL's teflon lube is too thin and watery. I really like Green Oil and it seems to work well for all seasons.

I've also heard people swear by clear candle wax. Never tried it.

I use Finishline Green, Apply sparingly and take a small bottle with you, incase you need it.

I've been using Rock N Roll Gold and its amazing stuff in normal weather. Not sure what it will be like on Saturday in the rain but I guess I'll find out.

Actually, I just remembered I was caught in a downpour a couple of weeks ago and the Gold was absolutely humpty in the wet weather. Apologies. I guess I'll have to look for an alternative as well.

I'll be sticking with the Squirt wax I always use. Admittedly,it's better in the dry than wet in my experience, but it doesn't leave residue all over the rims, cassette and chainrings the way wet lubes do. And I carry the sample bottle they sent me with a top up supply should I need it.

Chain care is then a simple case of brushing the chain which removes the loose flakes of wax, taking the dirt with it, before reapplying Squirt if necessary.

Right now, I'm just glad that Amazon have finally notified me my long-overdue 23mm Conti GP4000s tyres are available for collection, despite the tracking showing TNT still had them sitting in Belgium for the last week as of this morning! Now I have the option of replacing my 25mm 4000s's to allow my new mudguards to go on.

I've heard of people waxing their chains, using melted wax, but didn't realise there was a spray version...

"didn't realise there was a spray version..."

Yet another crossover from the motorcycle world. Spray-on chain wax.

Incredibly weather resiliant, but not really suitable for bicycle chains as they don't get hot. Or mine doesn't anyway, but I'm a mere pootler.

I'm not heard of a use for old vinyl like that before! Was it the Bay City Rollers?

I quite like squirt too, but I've found on bikes that are siting around, my winter fixed for example it doesn't provide rust protection from general damp like an oil based product does.

I now, wash the chains in white spirit and lube with something thicker if the bike isn't going to be used for a while.

POFFF. My chain broke on the way home, so I shall be forced to apply a new one.

Squirt is a drip on wax rather than a spray. It's vital to follow the instructions properly. It works best when used on a clean (and I mean clean) chain with no other lube on it. Even with a new chain, I soak it in degreaser (Morgan Blue in my case) overnight then leave it to dry hanging up.

Squirt should then be dripped onto the rollers only. It's not a disaster if it goes elsewhere but it might result in more dirt being attracted. However, that can mean very minor signs of rust on the untreated areas if the chain gets wet. But it is easily wiped off. A second application is recommended before riding in wet conditions.

Although I have Squirt on my town bike right now, I end up resorting to wet lube during the colder, wetter months. The road bike rarely sees the rain (this Saturday probably excepted!) so it's Squirt year-round.
