"A £15million funding package will see a fleet of electric cars, new cycling infrastructure and a roll out of the Smarter Choices, Smarter Places Programme introduced throughout Scotland over the next two years."

"£7million additional investment for cycling and walking infrastructure"

The investment announced today by Transport Minister Keith Brown could mean up to £14million in improvements to cycling infrastructure as the Scottish Government seeks match-funding from partners.

I guess we will need our usual well-informed beancounters to decipher this cryptic Keefspeak and tell us for sure if these particular cyclingbeans have already been promised/spent in previous cyclingbean announcements, and how many of these beans are actually cyclingbeans comapred to electric hovercarbeans.

Sustrans breakdown suggests £3m for magic cars, £7m for cycling and walking infrastructure and £5m, in 2015/16 for "behaviour change" (advertising).

I think the £7m is actually "new" money - in that it hasn't been announced before. The £14m is dependent on local authorities being able to rustle up £7m "match funding" - by no means guaranteed, as they are all skint.

The £5m for behaviour change in the 2015/16 budget is unlikely to be new money - just an allocation within a previously agreed budget. Could be wrong though, as its all so opaque.

Yeah, Sustrans mention the £7m as unused allowance for inflation from the new bridge. Essentially inflation has been lower than expected so there's £7m not being used for the bridge. Literally the crumbs from the bridge.

    #Cycling cash 14/15 up 1%->1.9% of #transport. Pls continue trend in 15/16!

SO, generally (or genuinely even) good news.

Next May's PoP might be a bit of a celebration PLUS a bit more pressure (just before or after Westminster election so 'all' the candidates or new MPs will want to be there...)

When driving back down the M90 from Perth, near the Forth additional crossing, I counted 5 or 6 enormous gantries with electronic signs on e.g variable speed limits.

Now those gantries were so large, they were effectively big enough to be footbridges. Must cost what, 2 or £3m each!

I thought these could easily have been footbridges in Edinburgh city itself, e.g. connecting the Roseburn path to Dalry; across Easter Rd*; across Sheriffhall; etc etc

But no, they are simply there to try to increase the throughput of motorists stuck in their own self-inflicted congestion

Wohoo - £7m for cycling. Pity about tomorrow's announcement of £745m for road building:

It's the claim of 14,000 extra jobs that I find particularly amusing. Clearly, it is a magic, job creating road - rather than a boring old strip of tarmac.

    "£7m for cycling"

    For the WHOLE of Scotland.

    "£745m for road building"

    JUST for Aberdeen.

Hmm £15M eh? So long as local councils match fund. I see this as being very unlikely as in Fife alone the SNP Scottish Gov't have cut central funding by £100M! Essential services are scrabbling round for cash, never mind things like cycling/walking.

Sustrans community links programme is regularly massively oversubscribed, far more applications than they can match. So hopefully this will enable them to put more of them in.

Good news! The Scottish Government has released millions of pounds more in unspent contingency funds from the Forth Crossing project.

Bad news! The Scottish Government is spending the cash on accelerating the A9 dualling project
