Guy in front maybe caused me to be heckled by grannies

I was passed today on WoL path by skinny youngster on single speed going at fair clip.

On approaching bridge over a70 to canal I stopped for two wee dogs (off leash) and two old ladies (off leash), they were spread out right across the path

Bearing in mind I was at a standstill I was perplexed by the heckle - Yir supposed to slow down a bit. So I asked, are you talking to me or the dogs? It was me she was talking to. I am afraid I invited her to bile her heid as I was in fact stopped so had slowed down so she was complaining to me about something I had done.

Now I feel bad because I am guessing the guy in front took them a bit on the speedy side and I was receiving his heckle.

    What larks

Probably keen motorists. Or ardent Yes supporters. Or both.

Maybe the emphasis was "You're supposed to slow down a bit" and they therefore deemed a full stop excessive and were heckling that?

    @gembo

They were concerned that a man of your age was bicycling to work. They think you should take it easy, put your slipper-shod feet up.

As an aside, that was me that hailed you just short of the aqueduct last night. I was going to tell you to speed up.

I got told last night that "You're one of the good ones" after I correctly anticipated that one of her collies was likely to stray into my path. Makes me wonder how many cyclists must blast past her on the path.

Just need lots of signs on the canal saying "Be Good".

Thanks for all your support, I had been having good old banter with all the dog walkers out for a nice day unable to control their dogs and stopping for them all the way down the WoL path. The grannies just put the tin lid on it, but should not have reacted so cheekily.

I've had this before when I've pulled over and stopped for others coming the opposite way. My response was 'I'm stationary, how much more slower would you like me to go!' This perplexed the whingers, and I scooted off while they thought of a proper response.

Did you tell her she's one of the bad ones?

Or did she only care about you taking responsibility for the safety of her dogs, not her taking responsibilty for your safety?

(I think we all know the answer to that question.)

Hmm, was this at around 8.30am this morning?

I ride that route (and could possibly be described as a young singlespeeder riding at a fair clip), and have a vague recollection of passing a rider and some walkers with dogs this morning. In my defence, I ride at "a fair clip" where appropriate, and slow considerably for people, particularly with dogs.

Did I pass you just before the tunnel, having sat behind you for a second until you noticed me, and I sneaked by on the right once past the muddy puddles?

If it was me, I recall slowing considerably (to the point of literally trackstanding) for the dopey old ladies who were taking up the entire path with their two small pooches. I thanked them as I passed, although to be honest, their efforts to allow me past didn't really deserve thanks! (Does anyone else do that? Thank people, when you were the one more inconvenienced?! I guess it is like passing people on one way roads in the car or on the bike, when you thank the person for thanking you!)

I did pass another female cyclist down there too this morning, although she was riding rather sedately (and very politely thanked me for giving her a "passing on your right") so I don't suppose she ragged past these grumpy pooch owners either. Clearly they were just having a bad morning.

Anyway, if you are referring to me - not guilty. Not all riders that "ride at a fair clip" are selfish inconsiderate riders. ;)

@pixelmix, that sounds correct. Apologies for transferring the blame on to you. We both slowed, indeed I stopped. I got the gip but hey no animals were harmed in the making of this production.

    Nice blue shade of singlespeed

Hey I resemble that comment! ;-)

@crowriver ... have you not been paying attention? It's the dwindling "No" camp that are all negative and gurney.

Thanks - it's a second hand Genesis Day One that came in lurid yellow and I had repainted in a more palatable blue!

Nice morning for riding down the shade of the Water of Leith. No doubt I'll see you down there again sometime - I use that when (a) the weather is good, and (b) I have left the house sharpish enough to allow for the extra 5 minutes over the more direct commute.

@barnton-to-town, I was just teasing gembo a bit by suggesting reasons for his apparently baffling ticking off by auld biddies.

You may see me this very morning. If I see any senile yes voters, with dogs, I will dismount and bow courteously

I shall acquire a dog in order to merit a full dismount and bow.

If you do I will also break a branch and sweep the carriageway in front of you to clear debris from your path

However, having met you recently and shaken hands firmly, it is my belief that you are not senile, therefore even if you do acquire a dog I am afraid you will not be entitled to the full sir Gembo treatment
