Spotted this morning, Nr Moray Place, Edinburgh. Kelly Communications small VW van with a Mayor Of London 'Cyclists Stay Back' sticker on the back.

We need the use of such stickers to be banned in Scotland before everyone has them and uses them as an excuse to mow down cyclists when turning left.

I wonder what would happen if a driver with a "cyclists stay back" sticker hit a cyclist with a "motorists stay back" sticker?

(I think we all know, but the asymmetry is illuminating).

I'm going to start carrying a pen and every time I see one of these I'll score out the 'Back' and replace with 'AWESOME'

@ARobComp I had a van change lane into me this morning without indicating. A couple of slaps to the side stopped me being squashed. Then they indicated and moved over as I'd slowed down. No use of mirrors, but also no sign of a stay back sticker.

I was behind a cement mixer last week which had a sign somewhat obscured by the cement chute. Rather than the usual nonsense though it read along the lines of:

Cyclists please be aware that the driver can't constantly monitor the danger zone on the left side of this vehicle so it's best to avoid it when the vehicle is indicating left.

Although it obviously wasn't that verbose I liked it's tone which suggested that the driver would be following the mirror, signal then manoeuvre process.

Spent a couple of unhappy hours on the M25 a week ago. Many vehicles that I spent time behind carried these stickers. I hadn't at all grasped how many. They seem to me to be a very unwelcome addition to our roadscape, but I can't imagine that anyone is going to try to stop people putting stickers on vans any time soon.

I very much like the idea of 'Cyclists Stay Awesome' stickers to place on top of the 'Cyclists Stay Away' ones.

    Spread to Stagecoach too -

At least it says PASS WITH CARE (on the right).

You'd only need stickers that said "awesome".

There's a van parked on my street (Kelly Communications) that has one of these signs. I've been musing a bit of night time guerrilla drawing with a permanent marker pen to say 'Stay back from cyclists'.

Might be kind of obvious its me though considering I'm the only person on this street who ever cycles to work.

Just tape a printout of the TfL statement over the sticker, with the bit about "only for HGV's" highlighted?

This is one of the better wordings I've seen.

However there doesn't seem to be any real need to have these on a transit.

Nice, I've ordered ten stickers and will distribute the other nine as loot to the first nine people to arrive at the next PY!

@acsimpson yes I've seen those tippers too and thought it was the right approach.

Only downside is you end up singing http://www.naden.de/blog/bbvideo-bbpress-video-plugin -->

"Working for BT" says the Kelly van. Perhaps the BT press office needs to receive a query on this sticker.

I quite like them having the word cyclist peppered around the place in drivers' line of sight, though.

Today I saw a 'Cyclists stay awesome' sticker on the back of small 'Murray's' (?) removal van.

Not sure if the proprietor had put it there, or if it was guerilla-ed

Saw a new sticker this morning, that contained within a few words so many perplexing issues, I had to write a letter as follows:

    "Chris Hufflett,
    Managing Director,
    The BSS Group Ltd
    Lodge Way House,
    Lodge Way,
    Harlestone Road,
    Northampton,
    NN5 7UG

    Dear Mr Hufflett

I was saw a “Hire-it” van belonging to your Group in Edinburgh today. On the left rear side of the van it carried a notice that said something like “Notice to cyclists. This van may turn left. Do not pass on this side.” I have some questions about this notice:-

    1. Do you agree that the law and the Highway Code state that, prior to turning left a driver must indicate that they are turning, and check in their side mirror to ensure that there is nothing at the side of their vehicle? (The van I saw was a small van, with no blind spots other than right behind its rear).

    2. Given that it is a legal requirement for a driver to indicate and take observations prior to driving, and that this will ensure adequate warning of their intention to other road users, what is the need for an additional notice?

    3. Does the existence of the notice indicate that your drivers intend to turn left without indicating or taking observations? In that case, the notice would be giving notice of an intention to break the law. However, if this is not the case, the notice is redundant.

    4. Why do you only see the need for the notice on one side of your vehicle? Surely it is equally true that the van “may turn” right.

    5. Why is the notice addressed only to cyclists? If your drivers are prone to turning left without signally or looking, then this is also a hazard to cars/ buses/ horses and carts/ motorcyclists, etc.

    6. Do you agree that it is perfectly safe and legal for cyclists to pass slow or stationary traffic in bus lanes and bike lanes to the left of other traffic?

    7. Do you agree that it is perfectly safe and legal for cyclists to pass slow or stationary traffic to the left, regardless of whether there are bus or bike lanes? The only hazard would come from vehicles turning left without indicating or using their materials - that is drivers acting illegally.

I would be grateful for answers to these questions.

Since it is my view that the only reasonable interpretation of your notice is that you intend for your drivers to act illegally, I am considering an approach to Police Scotland on this matter.

    Yours sincerely

    "

Since we know that it is not 'safe' to pass vehicles on the inside (because they may do illegal/stupid things, as you argue) and because in the absence of a cycle lane the law is confused at best about the legality of overtaking on the left of another vehicle, your para 7 adds nothing to your case, and indeed, gives them something to argue against.

    @mgj

Do we really know that "it is not 'safe' to pass vehicles on the inside"?

I pass vehicles on the inside every day, although not in every situation. I pass on the inside whan I think its safe to do so. There is always the residual risk of some driver doing something stupid, but there is that risk wherever I am on the road.

"Safe" is a meaningless word, really.

What is safer, sitting behind a bus breathing the particulates or passing it on the left? At a population level it seems we should be able to equate ppm of particulates to a single overtake in terms of risk, but as an individual it's pretty hard to know.

I've been wondering if insurers are offering a discount if fleet vehicles are fitted with these stickers. From an actuarial perspective it might reduce their risk exposure, regardless of whether or not it's morally right?

There were two work vans outside my house (nothing to do with me) with "Cyclists beware..." stickers on the rear.

They also had the very threatening "Pedestrians do not approach this vehicle" warning stickers on the side.

The best part? They were both parked completely on the pavement.

I should have taken a photo, but I did ignore the warnings and walked closely by.

Saw a new variation on the theme today.

A big blue scrap lorry had a couple of numberplateesque signs on it's mudflaps.

The righthand one said PASS SIDE

The lefthand on said SU A SIDE
