Martin Black, defending, revealed that his Kane’s licence was already endorsed with six penalty points for two fixed penalty offences.

Apart from those, he claimed, his client had an otherwise unblemished driving record.

He said: “He finds himself on the first occasion in danger of losing his entitlement to drive.

“He’s employed by Northgate Vehicle Hire as asset co-ordinator. It may come as no surprise that the nature of his work takes him throughout the UK.”

He added: “His driving licence is a pre-requisite of him retaining his current employment.

“He was returning from one depot to another and clearly his speed reached an unacceptable level.”

Kane was fined £300 and had his licence endorsed with four penalty points.

Passing sentence, Sheriff Douglas Kinloch told him that 100mph on the motorway was “a very fast speed indeed”.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: how about, if you need a driving license for your job, you drive in a way that will ensure it isn't taken away?

All this, "I'll lose my job" stuff... if you don't care about you losing your job, why should the courts care?

    Yeah. How about...

"I'm a gamekeeper. I have a habit of recklessly and knowingly discharging my gun when there are people around. In fact, I've shot three people recently, but I didn't really mean to. Please don't take my gun away, I need it for my job!"

Quite! And how about when you get your first 6 points, you take a long, hard look at your life and then consider if your need for speed is really worth throwing your career away over.

It also helps to be famous...

"Former England cricket captain Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff has escaped a speeding ban after arguing "exceptional hardship" to magistrates in Carlisle."
