    I have to say "brunch" is more familiar to me than "burach" (which I had to look up).

    Dog's brunch surely.

    > They should forget about rebuilding the whole of George St in fancy expensive flagstones and fancy trees until they've put the filters in.

    That's a good point.

    I'm just old enough that I can remember, on trips to Glasgow as a wee kid, that the main shopping part of Sauchiehall Street was then literally just a street with fences/barriers at each end to keep the motor traffic out.

    It did seem a little odd to be promenading all over what was really literally just a wide road, with kerbs and drains, but it worked just fine at creating a place for people until they got around to tarting it up a number of years later.

    I can understand (partly sadly) the attraction of "big fancy projects", but there is something to be said for just putting temporary motor traffic blocks in place, so that you can do an almost overnight change, and then re-design/re-pave the street somewhat more leisurely a few metres at a time later (which would presumably be less disruptive for the shops, bars, etc, than a huge "big bang" reconstruction?).

    [muses: Why does the forum have "quote" markup if it doesn't actually style quotations in an obvious way? ;-( ]

    Why does the forum have "quote" markup if it doesn't actually style quotations in an obvious way?

    Fake quotation is part of CCE lore.

    :)

    The quote does shown up in my rss reader. One of these days I might finally get round to adding a quote style in.

    SPOKES response

    SPOKES RESPONSE

    I am replying on behalf of SPOKES to the current consultation on this proposed route.

    We strongly support the proposals set out in the recent consultation for a link between the Canal and the Meadows.
    After the lengthy delay since the first version of the proposals were publicised some years ago, we consider that top priority now must be to implement this scheme as soon as possible.

    The scheme will provide an easy link for cyclists between the well-used canal towpath and the North Meadows cycleway. In particular, it should provide a safe crossing of Home St, a busy road with many cars and buses. It will also provide improved conditions and a safe crossing of Brougham Place.

    We would like to commend the Council for a number of improvements in the latest proposals including:

    • The proposal to allow 2 way cycling along Valleyfield St which will help cyclists wishing to travel to and from the Meadows to Bruntsfield;

    • The proposal to create separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians between Leven Ter and the crossing to the Meadows which should help to avoid conflict between these 2 user groups;

    • Moving the 2-way cycle lane from the east to the west of Home St and the crossing of Home St from Lochrin Pl to just north of Gilmore Place. This is a simpler solution which also should prevent cyclists from being blocked from crossing Home St by buses backing up across the Lochrin Place junction;

    • Continuing the southbound cycle lane on Brougham Place through the toucan crossing.

    The width of the 2-way cycleway on Home St is still 2.5m. We think this is unsatisfactory notwithstanding the volume of motor traffic on this road. As the volume of road traffic reduces in line in future with broader Council plans and strategies, the width of the cycle way should be increased.

    The current plans do not address the needs of cyclists travelling in a north south direction along the main radial route of Bruntsfield Place and Lothian Road. We understand that the proposals focus on a west - east route but we look forward to more ambitious and comprehensive plans for segregated cycleways along this corridor in due course,

    The plans ignore Lower Gilmore Place which is an essential part of the link between the Canal and the Meadows. We understand that there is likely to be development of the buildings in this street and that traffic volumes are limited at present, but we would like to see a rationalisation of car parking with car parking moved out of Leamington Rd. This would allow for contra flow cycling on Leamington Rd which would be a significant improvement for cyclists wishing to go directly from the Canal to Bruntsfield.

    Although I'm looking forward to this finally happening, it's a bit depressing it's taken nearly 5 years to come up with 32 painted cycle symbols and ~170 metres of segregated cycle lane...

    Construction Start/End estimated for Aug/20 - Dec/21 with 'completion' in Feb/22.

    I'd say it'll be worth the wait but...

    As minuted in March (my bold) -

    Question
    Meadows to Canal scheme- why were there delays?
    Answer
    - The delay was attributed to resources within the team as the team had to prioritise work associated with two community link plus bids, for which the team had been successful in being awarded both funding bids. The Meadows to Canal scheme was now at the stage where a Public consultation on proposals would be taking place within the next two to three months.

    From above “Closes 31st May”

    So it happened, any results yet?

    Nothing, according to the consultation page: “Results expected 1 Jun 2019
    Feedback expected 30 Jun 2019”. Then again time moves slowly at CEC.

    I emailed the project manager 3 weeks ago asking if there were any updates but I haven’t heard back. Going to have to move to Roseburn at this rate so I can enjoy a small amount of decent infrastructure.

    @CycleAlex - As Roseburn residents will be fleeing the apocalyptic wasteland that the cycle route will cause, you could snap up Roseburn property for next to nothing.

    Emailed Cllrs, project manager and AT team for an update and haven't heard anything. At this point I think there's just a deep state conspiracy to prevent the Kings Theatre junction from being less awful.

    Yes, apparently an updated design after Sustrans feedback

    They better have decided to demolish the King's Theatre and put a 5m cycleway through it to make this consultation worthwhile.

    Finally - they have seen sense and are going with my bike-firing trebuchet idea...

    Alternatively, this is some kind of elaborate performance art project.

    Sorry, does anyone still seriously believe that CEC genuinely intends to do this in the next 25 years, if ever? If so, I've got a bridge to sell.
