Crochet and cycling - who knew?

So, given that my ambitions to get fit and cycle lots have been put on hold until my chest gets sorted out, I've taken up crochet. I was mildly amused to discover early on that a couple of the popular crochet bloggers were into cycling, but just had the idea of searching 'cycling' on ravelry (massive knitting and crochet forum). Turns out there are at least 6 big groups - including folks who knit along to the Tour and the Vuelta; a 'pro-cycling fan' group; "Two-wheeled knitters:
Knitters (and crocheters) whose only wish is to craft and bicycle at once." and more....

Just discovered there's about as many Star Trek groups as cycling groups...(now wondering what other off the wall things to google...)

TractorFactory (of this Parish) and the man behind Tractor Factory Bunnets mixes the bike and the hook. I'm more of a sewing machine person.

Madame IWRATS was Scottish crochet champion the year she could be bothered entering. She is quite unconstrained by convention. Network cables, my discarded innertubes, nettles and marine hawsers have all been dragged into her world and emerged as garments or sculpture.

She also teaches, should you ever need a guide in the art of the hook?

Sounds like some of the more adventurous things from ECA's (ex) Tapestry Dept.

@insto - that';s brilliant! I'm told that the guy who does coffee on a boat at harrison park also crochets.

@iwrats - neato. i could seriously use some instruction...

I think she's doing a class at St Thomas of Aquin's on Monday evenings. Not sure if there's space.

I shall make enquiries if you wish. There's always someone drops out.

I might do better to wait for start of next term. I've probably learned all wrong anyway. I taught myself at 3am in the airport in Dubai...

Anything done in the small hours automatically gains immunity from the conventional categorisation of right and wrong.

In the doing, you have succeeded.

Very well. Perhaps a private lesson to put you on the right track might be advantageous? My life is testament to the deleterious effects of bad habits acquired through autodidact improvisation.

@iwrat - you may be right. My mother is an excellent crocheter and I have asked her many times to show me how, but we've never succeeded. I have signed up for the wait list though.

Maybe you could talk to MrSRD about a couple of hours of private tuition as a Christmas gift? If MmeIwrats were available and willing.

Yes, I have put serious thought into the feasibility of crochetting and cycling at the same time. I could get 3 bunnet rows in on the commute if it were possible.

We may have to have a special PY where we all crochet :)

Couldn't you have a mechanically (or electrically) powered machine mounted productively on the rear rack while you concentrated on the steering/braking??

Or we could indulge in knit picking?
