OK, so who had a misspent youth then? (Not cycling, of course.)

I only went once - works pool evening. As works outings went it was better than our attempt to cycle from Leith to East Saltoun but worse than white-water rafting.

As a long-standing member of the Angle Club in Morningside (now hideously re-named the Ball Room) I've never had reason to set foot in Marco's. Better class of gangster in the Angle.

My grandfather ran a pool hall, and when he retired he kept one of the tables and all of us grand kids played as soon as we could see over the top.

Hadn't played in years (literally) until last month in the Susses student union when I nearly cleared the table (would have too, if The table wasn't installed on a slant... )

Could definitely be drawn into a CCE pool evening if promised decent tables. I only play 8 ball though.

There is also Diane's pool hall. At Haymarket.

I prefer the atmosphere of snooker halls, though a full size snooker table will usually mean a game ending in a black ball.

The two at Hutchison x-way are interesting. The one nearest town centre has some good tables.

See also of course the Jean luc Godard movie Detective starring the great Johnny Halliday. Many scenes of continental billiards - a game played on tables without pockets.

Interestingly, French gangsters also drawn to the darkness and shadow of billiards rooms

Never went into Marco's but I sometimes played a few rounds of rather drunken pool in the City Caff: do they still have a pool table at the back? Haven't been in for at least a couple of years...

As a teenager in Kirkwall I sometimes used to go into the old fashioned snooker hall at the southern end of Victoria Street. No idea if it's still there, I somehow suspect not. Annoyingly I can't recall the proprietor's name, but I can still see the sign painted above the full length window, with heavy curtains to keep the warmth in. I never played there, just used to watch and hang out: it was all far too serious for me to risk getting into bother actually competing with one of the regulars!

I am seriously tempted, despite not being a lady. Eight ball on full size tables is it? I'll play under the name of Liberton Slim. Take it you can play a bit?

I'm sensing banditry...I'm one of those no hopers who owns a cue and can't play the same shot twice in a row.

I used to organise Random Doubles pool nights for a previous employer. Very popular they were. Need eight as a minimum, sixteen ideal.

I can't do today btw, and am out of town next tuesday.

    what about the 16th?

@iwrats I wish I was a pool shark. one of my uncles claimed to have paid for his law degree (at a good school) through pool. he taught me lots but seeing as I could barely see over the table at the time, I've not retained much of it, except his love of the game

Count me in, SRD. 16th works for me.

I'll say no more lest I fall into an innuendo quagmire and drive Uberuce into an ever deeper pit of despair at my requirement for salvation from Smutland.
