note to admin, sorry not an infrastructure Q) feel free to move .....

I like to take the odd picture when I'm out riding, but my failing recently is that my phone camera hasn't enough juice and is slow to start up, as I either leave it off or in flight mode to save battery. What I miss is a point and shoot FAST!! camera which has no real need for batteries - thought I know that film isn't the way to go as I like to upload and share my pictures. Does anyone know of a small light camera, with a fast instant click facility which won't need expensive power hungry proprietery batteries, i.e. AA/AAA which I can pull out and snap shots with without breaking the bank. It doesn't need to have a million fab functions and gadgets, but just be FAST, Auto focus, last years on a single cheap AA battery, and have a rugged case incase I drop it!

    Cheers, Dave C

"last years on a single cheap AA battery"

    Think that's a bit unnecessary.

Have a couple of NiMHs handy.

Presume even small cameras use SD cards so (not answering your questions) you might (also) think about one of these -

http://www.eyefi.com (s/h older one off ebay - saves fiddling with computers. Can send direct to Flickr, marked public or not.)

    Check camera compatibility.

Or you could get a better smartphone.

Or you could get a better smartphone.

any reasonable smartphone is a fairly costly item and note that weatherproof, so would normally hidden away somewhere waterproof and not that accessible on the commute. It takes a while to dig it out, then faff around with gloves and touchscreens to unlock, activate camera and get a photo... I don't think it's gonna suit Dave's needs.

What you want is something indeed akin to film camera, but with a digital memory!

DPReview used to show startup times. Do you need it to be small enough to fit into the pocket of a set of baggies or the rear pocket of a bicycling jerseytop (thereby indicating a need for a collapsible lens)? Do you demand a bare minimum of at least one semi-manual exposure mode? Do you need it to either have its own Wi-Fi or to use SD cards so that you can use Eye-Fi?

I normally just recommend getting the most Lumix or Powershot as permitted by budget unless Olympus are still doing their TG range and you like the purported ruggedness or you're wanting something with a decent specified minimum aperture, in which start at ~£200 in Nikon's compact range.

I normally just point and shoot. Sometimes I zom in but I find atm with phone camera the images are not great on zoom, so really a basic camera with the fast 'startup' time. It will sit in my jersey rear pocket hence w/proofness and ruggedness incase it bounces out, gets dropped. My other half has an older powerhsot but its massive and like most cameras with a retractable lense takes time time to startup. I don't really need a large screen either so long as I can see I have what I want in the shot.

I saw on my last long ride squirrels, stags and a buzzard up close but by the time I got my phone out, unlocked it, increased the brightness so I could see what I was doing, started up the camera.... I get my meaning? I want to just pull out the camera and hold down the button and take a picture, like old film cameras. But be in a semi rugged case and small enough to fit in my rear jersey pocket.

Thanks for the replies so far. :O)

I use a fujifilm Z series. seems to tick all of your boxes and is also available as a waterproof model. (at a price)It is absolutely tiny, (Smaller than some garmins, is rechargeable via the non standard usb cable supplied and takes quite decent snaps in auto mode. The zoom is digital though, so absolutely crap in that department.

I also like my Fujifilm. It is a Z33WP so is the waterproof one. It has a 3x optical zoom which I find pretty good. It is not going to be great for wildlife but you should at least be able to take a recognisable shot of furry and feathery stuff.

The bad news is it has been discontinued but the good news is they are available second hand quite cheaply.

Hmm The Z33WP looks to fit the bill with this:

"is rechargeable via the non standard usb cable supplied"

but I'd prefer "Takes AAA batteries"

Any others you'd care to recomend please?

    Many thanks, Dave C
