Last time I was at Waitrose Morningside, I knocked all the bikes over by mistake. Sorry everyone! They just toppled like dominoes. So many bikes packed in on those poor triangular-shaped racks. To make amends, I wrote to Waitrose (website customer service contact form), got following reply:

"I'm sorry to hear that you're not happy with the bicycle racks at our Morningside store.

I've spoken to the branch about this and they tell me that isn't an issue frequently raised, but they'll monitor the situation going forward. If you have any further concerns, please don't hesitate to speak to the duty manager when you're next in the store.

Thanks again for taking the time to write to us. If we can be of any further assistance, please let us know."

UNBELIEVABLE - we have been raising the issue of the crappy racks for years. Met with the manager and everything. They're especially bad if you have a bike with childseat on the back.

The lady at the racks same time as me knocked the whole pack over last Friday night as she tried to unlock hers. Black affronted. I told her the ratty nineties hybrid couldn't get no rattier and not to worry.

"Met with the manager and everything"

After which they even got CEC to visit and advise.

STILL NOTHING HAS CHANGED - no more/better racks.

They have spent a LOT on a whole new checkout system.

I'll have a word when I go in for Friday night beer on the way home.

Arne is the man. No one could refuse him anything.

"No one could refuse him anything."

That's not the point - you need someone who won't refuse you!

Think like a fox. Persuade Arne and let Arne loose on the manager.

Alright, not a fox - an ox, but you get the picture.

Arne was at a party I was at once. He gets this all the time WHere is it we have met before? Do you work for Standard Life etc. He then says in his nordic brogue - No I serve you at Waitrose (Gembo adds, though not if you are in a hurry)

I seek out Arne. If I'm ever in such a hurry as to avoid him, I'll get a telly and settle down. I knew you'd know him.

They apparently did manage to find funding to inject an intense coffee-smell into the fan vent for one of their fridges and have located said vent near the racks. Now I want a coffee every time I go in. The swine.

The new trollies aren't much cop either; no parking brake (which was handy for stopping the trolley rolling away when unlocking bikes) and they've done away with the little clipboard for one's shopping list.

    @david.nutter

Let's inject the scent of stainless sheffield racks into the air vents in the manager's office.
