Resolutions?
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.
"Resolutions?"
Organise a petition against the addition of foghorns to the already-excessive firework-noises?
Happy New Year everyone!
(The helicopter was very annoying)
Thanks for them, great photos.
Through in Bridge of Allan for new year, its a bit "sleepy hollow" compared to Edinburgh at this time.
Happy new year folks.
At least the helicopter seemed to be maintaining a height that aligned with the safe operating envelope (ie 1000ft or over).
It would have flown over from Glasgow to do this (but may have refuelled elsewhere).
Helicopter pilots have a 'do not fly in this zone' restriction that ensures the machine can be slammed into autorotate in the event of engine failure. This basically plots out to prohibit hovering at less than 1000ft and that height reduces if there is forward speed.
A lot of the work that this very costly machine does can be done using a much smaller and lighter drone with a remote TV camera fitted. If the drone suffers a failure there is no crew on board at risk (Glasgow has had 2 fatal Police helicopter crashes), and the smaller size and weight also delivers less risk of damage/injury on the ground. The lower costs could also mean that several drones could be operated by Police Scotland and they could be based across a wide geographic area, closer and more immediately available across Scotland.
NB there is a telling note in the interim report on the Clutha Bar crash - the helicopter was at 400 ft over the city centre when things went wrong.
Roads very quiet this morning. On the towpath at 0730, between Meggetland and the bypass I saw
The temptation to ride along in a dream enjoying the tranquility was very high. I had to keep reminding myself that everyone else on the route would expect it to be deserted as well, and that I still needed to concentrate in case they came dreamily round a corner in front of me.
@tulyar, the London firework display which went on a fairly long time was partly filmed by drone as you could see the green light it had circling the image of the fireworks.
.@greenroofer - you opening up the shop this morning?
@gembo - pretty much. Oddly, though, I'd spread my belongings generously across the changing room on the assumption that I'd be the only person using it, but when I returned from the shower I found that Hankchief had appeared as well and was trying to fit his stuff into the small space that wasn't occupied with mine.
It was nice to see him. The only downside was knowing that he will have inevitably done the Strava segments we share on our commute quicker than me, and this means that I have missed out on the chance to be the 2015 KOM on those segments for the couple of days it takes until someone quicker than me comes along.
Greenroofer - you're not wrong. 11 (2015) KOM's for me this morning. I'll try not to let the glory go to my head...
Although slightly worryingly I already had 3 random people give me kudos for this morning's commute, including a Russian chap who has kudos'd my last 3 rides and has an avatar picture with his face covered by a buff which makes it look quite sinister.
"face covered by a buff "
Cold in Russia(?)
