Apparently the engineer from the cycle counter provider Falco says that it's a bigger problem than can be fixed on site - he is travelling to Denmark next week to meet with the suppliers in a bid to resolve the problem.

Canal counter is still off and according to that website, not working at all. Not even in stealth mode.

@Chug I did mention the canal counter too, although frankly they would be better off just reinstalling it further to the west.

I believe there are counters further west - I think there's one at HP - but they don't have the screens. I'm not sure of the organisational connection between the two types of counter. They may be two different organisations.

The counter strips on roads and paths with boxes are pure CEC.

I Love the one at Benderloch! I have cycled over it as the first person that day a couple of times! :O)

Hmm, I think that it will fall quite some way short of my optimistic guess for a full year of counting of 750,000...

There's a new historical function that lets you compare month by month with past years. It's not very user friendly for letting you compare long periods or tallying the results, and there's not a lot of data yet. But it's fun to mess around with. Trends don't necessarily look positive, but there's really not a lot of data.

I used to go over the MMW counter twice a day, but since the new off-road route to the Innocent opened I don't. I can't be the only one to have diverted away from the counter, which might reduce the total a bit. I suppose the new route might have caused some people to divert onto the counter - would be interesting to know what impact this has had. Perhaps the counter would be best moved to the main junction of MMW - would capture a huge number of cyclists, although placing the sensors would be tricky.

Looks like the MMW counter will top half a million tomorrow, was at 499,600 odd this afternoon (unless we organise a CCE night ride up and down MMW…)

We hit 500k tonight. Last year we hit 500k on the evening of 13th November, so we're seven days ahead.

There are lots of reasons why this is not a great measure of the growth of cycling in the city, including that people change their routes. We certainly use the bridges a lot more rather than MMW since the bridges changed to 20mph.

But still, it looks like we're two to three percent up on last year. An okay figure, steady growth but no cycling revolution...

Interesting - have you personally noticed an improvement?

The MMW cycle counter has been down (showing 0) for most of this week. I tweeted about it this morning.

I noticed on Tuesday it was reading zero, and I even tried jumping on the sensors, but it didn't help. I meant to report it, but I was having a busy day and forgot all about it.

Sabotage! Trying to prevent us breaking the 500k barrier.

Spokes says they reported last week.

    (I kept forgetting too).

pity, as the tourists have been having such fun watching it changed whenever I cycled over.

I took note of the FRB one for the first time on Tuesday. I was no 13 for the day in the morning and no 253 in the evening.

Not massive numbers. Should we be worried?

"Not massive numbers. Should we be worried?"

As long as buses and pedestrians are still using it, hopefully not.

I didn't spot that, but I did spot that there is now more cycling friendly signage in place around the works, which instead of telling us to dismount suggests that we instead ride through the area at walking speed, which seems like a fairly reasonable request. I was only on MMW rather than diverting through QuarterMile because the lights had just turned red as I approached the crossing at the top of MMW.

“which seems like a fairly reasonable request“

Yes and, perhaps more importantly, tells pedestrians that people on bikes HAVE the right to be there if they behave responsibly.

Yeah - much better compliance on that sign than the Cyclists Dismount before it for the closure of the other side of the path. I'm a fan.

Having said that with these works I can't help but get the feeling that, because they're not disrupting a precious road, they can go on for as long as they like.

Chicanery in place at the top of the works this morning. IMV making things worse but maybe felt necessary to slow downhill bikes...

Yes that's quite annoying (and the barriers seem very mobile.) Given the speed with which they arrived, I'm assuming they were part of the plan all along rather than a direct response to observations/feedback.

It seems to be unreliable at counting at the moment.

Several times I've passed over and it hasn't recorded anything, but sometimes it does. I've also seen others pass over and it not register.

So the counts must be misleadingly low at the moment.

Must try to get a video of it.

Also, is there any way to compare previous data with current data? - that should highlight an anomaly.

I was just made aware of this map:

    http://eco-public.com/ParcPublic/?id=4586#

Obviously no cycling going on anywhere in the UK north of Manchester.
