SNP will provide chauffeur car far Salmond

    BY PAUL HUTCHEON

THE SNP has agreed to provide a chauffeur-driven car for former leader Alex Salmond.

Party bosses approved the perk. It is believed to be the first time a political party has continued to pick up the tab for a vehicle after a leader has quit.

An SNP source said the car was to take the former First Minister from A to B"
and would save public money through a reduced expenses bill.

The party uses a private-hire ltrm as and when required.

lt was reported last month that the former SNP leader had been using public transport.

"l love public transport but it takes me some time to get around at the moment," he said.

Scottish Tory deputy leader Jackson Carlow said SNP membership subscriptions were being used to pay for the ex-First Minister's "imperial" lifestyle.

He said:Considering Alex Salmond seems determined on a new career as the SNP's back-seat driver, it's perhaps no surprise the SNP is splashing out on a chauffeur-driven limousine to ferry him around."

Scottish Labour MP Anne McGuire said: "Alex Salmond stood down months ago but he's still acting like he is First Minister.

An SNP spokesperson said; The former First Minister has no access to the Government car service. in contrast to former prime minusters and a number of other UK Government ministers.

Therefore. his transportation, including to party events, has no impact at all on the public purse.

I have a similar t shirt with the bike as pac man munching the car. Same bike and same car as other tees mentioned. No words needed.

I'd suggest that he does what all Lord Provosts & Council Leaders should also do and use a local taxi service when he needs a private car, and, in the interest of being safe & efficient it would be sensible for him not to drive, so he can work or rest en route.

I had a couple of visits to Sustrans sites by the Chairman of a major, long established construction company, whose great great grandad ad built a lot of the routes we were using for cycle paths. He eschewed the company chauffeur driven car chasing him around the UK, but had a portfolio of executive quality hire-car & driver providers, who would be given a timetable for collection and delivery and paid only for what was used.

Perhaps SNP should look at providing local employment for such operators across the UK, and in the process driving up standards for this service.

I'm sure that if some Councils dumped the civic limousine, and required the local taxi service to provide spotless examples of the local taxi fleet (with clip on civic 'flag' if appropriate) we would see a rise in quality and use of local taxis.
