Are more women cycling? (If so why?)

    There have been a few mentions on CCE that show some people believe/observe that the ratio of women to men is changing.

    I would say this has been the case for several years (in Edinburgh).

    I don't often cycle during the morning commute time so can't judge if this is true for all 'types' of cycling, or time/days.

    A young woman / teenager got on the train at Inverkeithing this morning with a 29er which had clearly been used for it's intended purpose, but it also had cheap lights stuck on it, and she was using it as transport. She was also in 'civvies', well young person track suit civvies.

    See a very small number of women in Fife at commute time on bikes. Unfortunately they are noticeable because their numbers are so small. There is a marked difference in town where numbers seem high enough that you don't actually notice women on bikes.

    As example above, a lot of of the women I do see, are young, and on MTB's of some type which have been used for that purpose. good to see that they have made the connection that they can also be used to get you about more generally. Maybe cycling as a young person is now 'acceptable' as a pass-time, and that is why more of these young folks are cycling about on muddy MTB's

    @baldcyclist.

    I probably see 3 regular female commuters (probably including the one you mention) on the trains coming from Fife (one has been less visible recently), but very few cycling over the bridge.

    I did notice a higher proportion of female cyclists when I came out from town along the canal on Monday morning.

    Maybe half a dozen regular commuting women from Currie/Balerno travelling at the same time as me. Nearly all Rip along at pace. Not that I am saying this is necessary just that the commute to town is nine or ten miles so takes thirty minutes plus some.

    I think this number was more like four in the past. So on the one hand fifty per cent increase but on the other numbers small.

    The bike parking at waverley court in the basement has say 100 spaces and thirty are regularly used by women. Is my estimate.
