I've heard it all now. Seemingly the TROs are for 'motorised bikes' to be allowed into bus lanes. Not sure when 'motorbike' became 'motorised bike' but there is a huge difference of concept and what folks might think of when using these two different terms.
Yet LeithCentralCC used the term 'motorised bike' on twitter this evening when tweeting about motorbikes being allowed into bus lanes.
I know I sound pedantic, but language, and the concepts it represents and how it does this is one way that decisions are manipulated. And I do feel there is a big issue here in a tweets from community councils playing down the concept of 'motorbike' by representing this as 'motorised bikes'. It is incomprehensible that there can be any other reading of this other than an effort to minimalise the idea of motorbikes sharing bus lanes: after all the term used was longer (taking up more characters) than the proper term.

  2. Have you got a link to a copy of the TRO? It's possible that motorised bike might actually be the correct term, which covers electric bikes and (I think) motorbikes under 50cc.

the TRO is for motorcycles. Scooters is the term used for motorcycles less than 50cc.
The TRO is for all motorbikes not confined to engine size. Its very worrying. And using terms such as 'motorised bikes' really does water down the concept of what is proposed. Because it makes folks think of electric bikes or small powered bikes. Not what most of us would think of as motorcycles.

ETRO14328 B is the changing hours bit and 'A' is the permitted vehicles bit.

Motorcycle is defined in the 1984 Road Traffic Regulation Act. The TRO refers you to this definition:

In this Act (except for the purposes of [F1sections 57 and 63]) “motor cycle” means a mechanically propelled vehicle (not being an invalid carriage) with fewer than 4 wheels, of which the weight unladen does not exceed 410 kilograms.

There is no restriction on engine size, and frankly 410kg is fairly hefty when compared to the weight of a moped or pedalcycle.

The draft TRO proposes to allow these vehicles to use bus lanes and I find it appalling that a tweeter from an official community council account used the term 'motorised bike' instead of motorcycle which gives an entirely different idea from what is actually being proposed as demonstrated above by the comment by wilmington Cow.
