Rachel Milne, 64, said many residents would struggle to get about unless they had access to a car. She added: “I think it’s appalling that there’s no thought being given to people who need to use the bus. Not everybody has a car, not everybody has the health and fitness to be able to walk up that hill to the bus stop.

Urm..pretty sure the 40 is going to go through it instead.

The 40 isn't as good for getting into town as the 15 - it means changing at least once - but it's a pretty non-story unless I'm missing something.

50 lines of "NO BUS SERVICE CATASTROPHE FOR VILLAGE LEADS TO PENSIONER APOCALYPSE" followed by a little footnote that the No. 40 is instead being routed through.

    This is Edinburgh. (Evening News)

  5. The headline is nonsense, but c'mon guys, we complained vociferously on here about 'losing' Princes Street when Geirge Street was right beside it.

Yes, another bus service will go through, but that 'at least one change' (careful there, some will, jump on that and start telling you that they can't imagine needing to have two changes anywhere) will make things 'seemingly' too difficult for many.

That said, I know someone who doesn't believe anyone 'choosing' to live in a rural location deserves public transport which is subsidised by city dwellers. He was being a London pillock granted.

    Hmmmm

  7. Right, so you believe people in rural areas have less right to services?

EDIT: Actually, not getting involved. I'll leave it at that.

When I moved out of my parent's house their village still had only one bus service. A proper only one, too, which only went six miles to the nearest market town only once a day (twice on Tues/Thurs market days). Now, of course, you can get a coach directly to London from the end of the road. Or Skegness or Boston, though I can't imagine why anyone would.

If I want to use a bus to go to work from home I need to change once.

And there are probably more people in my street than live in auchendinny.....

    Can't see the problem?

Of course, the main reason that villages don't have bus services is because no one uses them. There used to be two buses from here to Inverkeithing - 6.30 and 7.30am. No one used the 6.30am one (apart from me and a couple of other people). I stopped using it (to use my bike). On the days I'd used the 7.30am bus it was similarly empty. So the chopped the 7.30am bus. So at least they've combined the two sets of few users onto one bus. But I know loads of people who drove to Inverkeithing Station.

    Chicken, meet egg. Egg, chicken.

The 15 is not a busy bus by the time it gets the Roslin; this being the one I get on at ~1800 in Morninside, at which point it's at the stage of busy where I'll usually get a seat to myself, but have to look for it.

I wasn't saying they shouldn't complain, just that the story is wrong.

    ^ what Min said.

The article should read "Village to lose only bus service and have it replaced by what will then be it's only bus service".

The main thrust of the article was the difficulty and inconvenience to local pensioners going to access services in Penicuik, which unless I'm very much mistaken, the replacement service will offer.

From Penicuik, you can then get a number of different fast, frequent services direct to Edinburgh which will probably be quicker and more convenient than the somewhat parochial 15. It's also a much better service than many other comparable villages in Mid and East Lothian will be recieving. Oh and it will still be free because of the National Entitlement Card.

It's the introduction of a mild irritation to a small number of bus users in the village, rather than the end of days.

They recently built a lot of swanky new McMansions in Auchendinny on the Dalmore Mill site, which must have pretty much doubled the population of the village. Evidently it hasn't increased bus patronage enough to make it a sustainable service.

  15. Apologies all, looks like I misread that this was just a complaint at the headline / way the story was written. Mea culpa.

The 15 usefully goes/did go directly into the centre of town.

The 40 appears to take a leisurely tour of Mid Lothian before ending up outside the Chocolate Teapot shop in Portobello.

So if I lived in Auchendinny I'd be pissed off too.

Still not a well worded article, but they should have pointed out that two buses would be required to get into Edinburgh.

The 15 stops in the early evening, whereas the 40 goes on till a bit after 11pm. Dunno how much of a good thing that is for the hypothetical pensioners.
