    Transport and Environment Committee

    10.00 am Thursday, 18th August, 2022

Hybrid Meeting - Dean of Guild Court Room / Microsoft Teams

This is a public meeting and members of the public are welcome to attend in the Dean of Guild Courtroom or watch the webcast live on the Council’s website.

The law allows the Council to consider some issues in private. Any items under “Private Business” will not be published, although the decisions will be recorded in the minute.

Ah, so most Cllrs will probably be there in person

    PTPAP

    Most disappointing really.

‘Lots of new developments, more traffic, more congestion, slower buses. No money for P&R improvements. BUT we’ll take out some bus stops and improve journey times marginally’.

    My bold

    Medium to Long Term Measures

    • Reintroduction of bus lane to Dolphington onslip
    • Enhance walking and cycling routes, particularly at junction hotspots
    • Cross boundary cycle network improvements
    • Enhancement of existing and consideration of new park and ride sites
    • Improve transport interchanges
    • Re-design of Barnton junction
    • Implement electric vehicle infrastructure
    • Provision of bus priority measures along the A90 from Fife to Edinburgh,
    including consideration of bus lanes
    • Changing directional sign to direct traffic to Queensferry Crossing via
    Hermiston Gate/Newbridge, not Barnton
    • Consider upgrading VMS provision and strategy
    • Increase train frequency and capacity
    • Increase parking at rail stations
    • Improve rail interchanges
    • Improve bus waiting facilities
    • Major junction modifications

I thought that was the new one Scott was bigging up as the biggest ever or whatnot and was rather disappointed for a moment.

Although the fact nothing seems to have been done from it in four years isn’t massively confidence boosting either...

I’m sure council officers must love the dear professor.

I support the action being taken by Council staff as the current pay offer is appalling. Still, Councillors could have shown solidarity on the picket line (best expressed through the medium of coffee and hot rolls in my experience) and still attended Committee.

It's simply playing at striking by politicians - they suffer no financial loss by cancelling the committee, no black mark on their attendance record, no sanction for taking unofficial strike action.

Also, the Councillors are literally the employers in this dispute. Yes, I know it involves many moving parts and parties - but ultimately the Councillors are standing beside the people they are directly in dispute with, which is kind of weird.

    “which is kind of weird”

    Yes

IF key Cllrs or committee related officials were directly involved TODAY, then maybe.

Otherwise it’s more delay after a four month gap in moving things on towards whatever, and (presumably) diary consequences.

Has SA the authority to adjourn?

If not, presumably other Cllrs went along with it??

Spokes Tweet says there was a vote, presume recorded.

There was a vote. Only the LibDems voted against.

The Transport & Environment Committee was adjourned today in respect of these workers & others like them across Edinburgh. We showed clear support for the workers & called on the Scot Gov to end the strike.

Many thanks to @CllrCMiller for seconding the motion.

    Mmm

    Definitely gesture politics.

    Probably counterproductive.

The Tories also voted against adjournment, all except Christopher Cowdy who hasn't learned how to Tory yet.

@neddie - ah, I missed that! I wonder if he’ll be suspended for dissent, like the Labour two?

Am I reading this right? A motion calling on the Scottish Government to resolve a dispute between Councils and Council staff was seconded by a Green councillor, their party being part of that Scottish Government.

I don't have a twitter(don't trust myself tbh), but if anyone here does and happens to run across any of the many comments by Edinburgh Labour councillors blaming the Scottish Government for the funding cuts to LAs, I'd appreciate it if you could nip in and ask them to state directly and unequivocally what other part of the fixed block grant they and/or Scottish Labour think should be cut to pay for extra LA funding.

And for the record, I'm entirely open to arguments on that score, but I am getting a smidgeon bored of reading people carping on at the SG to fix everything while studiously avoiding any mention of how they think they should go about doing it.

“while studiously avoiding any mention of how they think they should go about doing it“

    I know what you mean

Someone did suggest scrapping the Sheriffhall Roundabout

    But, everyone knows, that’s a different budget…

As a result of the adjournment of todays Transport & Environment committee The TRO’s relating to the communal bins review were not approved and may need to be re advertised.
Important if you objected as you may need to resubmit.

Came to last Critical Mass on bike loaned by Bike Station.

Believed to live in SQ because he ‘can’t afford to live in ward’.

Anyone have a link to today's TEC webcast?

The link on the "18 August" page still links to the old adjourned meeting
