A motion being brought to Transport and Environment Committee today seeks an update on plans previously discussed which would deal with local flooding issues in Inverleith. @VicNicSNP and local MSP @AngusRobertson explained to us what the solution might look like.

Did anyone hear why Councillor Dijkstra-Downie (LibDems) left during the debate on Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route to be replaced by Clrr Ross, and then returned immediately after? I wonder if she didn't quite agree with the LibDem position and was subbed out?

She’s done it on previous occasions too.

trialling exempting private hire vehicles in 7/7/7 bus lane trial. Changing 2 variables at once is going to make the trial pointless if you want to see additive impact of longer hours on bus speeds.

Looks like the St James Quarter developers are "trying again" to force through access for vehicles to the front of the 'W' (golden turd) Hotel / St James Square, after it was previously refused at the Oct 2023 committee.

    https://democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/documents/s73029/7.2%20-%20St%20James%20Quarter%20Introduction%20of%20a%20Traffic%20Regulation%20Order.pdf

Do they think they can bully the council into submission?

This is what the square should look like, according to the original developer's submission and mock-up. Note: people using the space:

Since that decision, somehow the hotel have been allowing vehicles into that area. (How is this legal? What deals were done with council officers behind closed doors?)

It currently looks like this, a sterile car-dominated space, with no pedestrians "lingering":

It's a repeat of West Parliament Square all over again, and sets a terrible precedent by allowing cars into one of city's few pedestrian spaces.

    Minutes of the Oct ctte:

Also private hire drivers will be horrible to cycle alongside in the bus lanes. I take the lane but know lots won't.

TEC just voted 9-2 in favour of not allowing vehicles into the St James Sq pedestrian space. A small win for pedestrians and public realm in the city!

Now it only remains to be seen how long it will take the hotel to remove all the barriers, planters, security guards and other car-related crap, and convert the space back to one that can be used by people... Or, whether the council will enforce the automatic bollards being set back to the "up" position...

From TEC papers and ctte meeting...

...levels of compliance with mandatory training (including cycling awareness training) ... Licensing Training: Taxi and Private Hire Drivers’ which details that compliance was only sitting at 49%

With Cllr Aston pointing out that Private Hire Cars (PHC) have a higher rate of compliance on completing mandatory training, at 69%.

Don't know the maths, but that means black cab drivers' compliance is far lower than 49%...

Strangely, that also tallies with my anecdotal experience of PHC versus taxi driving: I find PHC drivers very cautious and respectful* around me while riding, whereas I've had a few bad interactions with black cab drivers.

*touching a large piece of wood on that

I can't find up to date figures of drivers but the chip wrapper suggests twice a many vehicles in the PHC trade. I suspect that taxis have more drivers than PHCs per vehicle though.

If the figure is 2 to 1 then that makes taxi compliance just 10%. Of course it's possible that each taxi has 3 drivers on average and PHCs only one which would swing things substantially and give taxi drivers a score of just over 40% compliance.

A fellow South Morningside parent submitted a petition for safety improvements around the school after their child was hit by a van on Morningside Drive. That's been accepted for discussion at. Transport Committee next week - Thursday 12th - and I'm going along to help make the case. Does anyone have experience of presenting a petition at Committee and suggestions on what to look out for? We're just going to prepare a 5 minute statement stating our case, and then prepare for questions. Not expecting any hardballs as it's a child safety issue, except maybe some sniping from the Conservatives about the Greenbank Meadows Quiet Route but would appreciate any advice.

You might also mention the bus gate nonsense in Corstophine

    https://bsky.app/profile/spokeslothian.bsky.social/post/3lckxl7awr22g

Good/bad thing is decision was by TRO Sub not TEC.

    Shambles.

Anyone who says ‘CEC prioritises children going to school’ is LYING.

Might ask about ‘progress’ on school streets and other ‘policies’.

As you’ll know, various CCEers have done deputations. Hope they’ll post here, or maybe PM.

More roads proposed to be 20mph.

    https://democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/documents/s78131/7.6%20-%20Extension%20of%2020mph%20network%20-%20TRO%20promotion.pdf

Can anyone tell me which of the included roads is currently 60mph? Sue Webber MSP is complaining about the effect of bus timetables from reducing 60mph to 20mph.

As far as I can see, the only road in the list which may currently be 60mph is Cammo Walk: a narrow country lane now surrounded by new housing estates (including a primary school). And no scheduled bus services.

There's a very small chance that a wee bit of Society Road would go from 60 to 20. I imagine they will just be changing the 30 section to 20, rather than extending it as well.

That doesn't count, as for the Tories there is on such thing as society.

There are also a few km of roads in the rural roads review which will go from 60 to 20. None of which are on bus routes as far as I can tell. Map here.

Cammo walk is also mostly covered by a motor vehicle prohibition. So the only part covered by the change would be a blind bend shortly before a cul-de-sac which often has cars parked on both sides.
