An article on 20mph in the latest Edinburgh South Focus from the LibDems

‘These are controversial plans and the Edinburgh Evening News (12/01/15) has reported “overwhelming” opposition to the scheme. The proposals have been welcomed by cyclists and some environmentalists. However motorists point out that speeds are already lower due to congestion, so the safety benefits are overstated, and that further restrictions are unnecessary.’

Meh, Libdems could be campaigning to introduce free petrol and I doubt anyone would give a monkeys.

    "cyclists and some environmentalists"

Sort of people who used to vote LD.

They are obviously broadening their 'appeal'.

"could be campaigning to introduce free petrol"

They'd get votes if that was a pledge.

They already do pretend to drivers that they are going to introduce free fuel. http://www.scotsman.com/news/scotland/top-stories/remote-areas-of-scotland-to-get-fuel-discount-1-3710085
there have been suggestions that remote areas discount would include places from which commuters travel daily to cities.

What if it was a vision?!

Don't worry. They're on the wrong side of an unstoppable change in public attitudes here. Within 5 years, everywhere will be defaulted to 20 mph.

I am looking forward to a few of these people popping by my house ahead of the general election.

My mother in law lives in Bridge of allan, and I answered the door when the tory candidate came round - he was a bit miffed when I said I wasnt voting for him, and didnt get the joke when I told him it was because I lived in Edinburgh !!

The thing that really gets my goat is the subdivision of people into "cyclists", "environmentalists" and "motorists". This is lazy thinking, and deliberately adversarial. Most people do a mixture of things, and pretty much everyone is a pedestrian in the end. When I drive, 20mph limits are annoying, but overall I can see the social advantage in having towns that are more peaceful in every sense.

Anyway, the Lib Dems are a complete irrelevance in South Edinburgh, and can get stuffed.

They want to hold Edinburgh West though...

Anyone who thinks the Lib Dems can hold Edinburgh West should get some money on quickly. They are currently third favorite at 17/2.

    @Min,

It was 40 if you include the dog as 1, IIRC.

Had a quick response from my local LD Cllr last night agreeing the tone could have been better and it could give the impression of being against it...

It was meant to be a request for views.

He is supportive of 20mph and pointed out the LD brought about the Southside pilot.

    True!

We'll never know if it was intended to be ambiguous...
