"The Bicycle Committee comprises three sub-committees: the Wheel Committee, the Saddle Committee, and the Technical Committee that includes a Disc Brake Working Group."

I give a negative number of hoots about sport cycling, but have to admit that that paragraph sounds fantastic. Much better names than the working groups in my department.

I was once part of a project team where I was the only person on it not called Dave or David. I asked to get taken off so that it could officially be called Project Dave. I wasn't allowed,so we called it Project Mostly Dave.

For small-scale reparations projects, I had our team implement a system whereby the project was named after the nearest public house to the particular location in question.

I got "Jolly Sailor" through, but was over-ruled on Roaring Donkey and Fighting Cocks. We have a lot of more mundane things like White Horse, Red Lion...

    True story.

At a previous employer, several of the managers had mysterious meetings for a Project Alderaan. Someone pointed out that Alderaan was the planet destroyed by the Death Star. None of us were then surprised when the outcome of the project was a big restructure that involved a lot of lay-offs.

Oh, also worked on a Project Asia, which was a merger between two companies. The companies were code named China and Japan. The person responsible for the names wasn't the most sensitive to history....

Thinking of starting a project (well it needs to get started) called 10x2020.

No idea what the outcome will be...

@chdot. Oh it's a "project" now is it? Is that an improvement on a "shared vision"?

When I worked years ago on the flotation of the Northern Rock building society, the project was (obviously) code-named 'Pumice'.

    Good question.

"Is that an improvement on a "shared vision"?"

    Well it would be...

I'd just like to point out that I have a veto over anything the Saddle Committee proposes.

I think I may put a rule in place allowing disc brakes for any peleton rider willing to use a second hand Brookes Flyer saddle.

In an office on Queen Street we had meeting rooms called Drum and Base, apparently Drum and Monkey was over ruled. Might only be relevant for residents from a certain period.

That's a week earlier than the 2013 announcement about disc brakes.

At the Council the meeting rooms are numbered. Creativity and fun are banned in case the Evening News gets to hear.

I don't have any amusing working group anecdotes, but I did spend a couple of years working part-time for EEVL.

Quick release recall on disk brake wheels: Here's a safety check diagram-

I thought every one put their levers up the fork towards the bars.

    Indeed, Steveo!

I was always told never to point a QR lever forwards incase a stick or something got in there and knocked the lever open, from that diagram it looks like the lever would also be too close to the rotor if you pointed it forwards.

The skewer is undone, I think that's the salient point. Kind of a weird recall, because how could you really ride along with your skewer undone anyway? The wheel would be flopping around all over the place, and drop out of the frame at the first provocation.

Still, I guess to cover all bases, you may as well have skewers that can't lock up the wheel, even if the wheel still falls out ;-)

@Dave - peculiarly enough, due to "lawyer tabs" the wheel might not fall out...

Gravity tends to hold the wheels in place when you're rolling along with the skewers open. You might get an unpleasant surprise if you attempt a bunny hop, however...

It does sound like a user-error issue, but I suppose there is a duty of care on manufacturers to try and make their products as idiot proof as possible.

I remember a friend of a friend coming to our door on Warrender Park Terrace with half his ear hanging off. He'd not done up his front QR skewer after fixing a puncture outside EB. He was rolling down the links to the meadows.

Bunny hopped over one of the speed bumps and saw a wheel go flying away from him.

He said that his last thought was "Some idiots lost their front wheel" before he stopped abruptly and his mind was filled with sound of pavement hitting his head. (no helmet and was absolutely fine apart from missing bits of ear)

Cars are too fundamental for our way of life to be hindered by idiot-proofing considerations...
