Who is it that actually does the road surface work when companies access utilities underneath? Is it done inhouse or (more probably) contracted to a third party who specialise in making a hash of road surfaces?

The story seems to miss the important point that a huge number of HGVs trundle over the setts and decorative cobbles all day everyday!

And not just trundle but turn at full lock which must put immense pressure on any road surface.

I watched a Post Office cash in transit vehicle get stuck in Rose Street and proceed to try a 180 degree 27-point turn that required repeatedly driving into the bollard as a backstop.

Think bt, water and electricity have their own reinstatement teams. Virgin farmed out. Often they'll do a temporary repair then return at a later date to fix it correctly.

Think nowadays there's legislation in place to make sure utilities put the infrastructure back to "as before" standard and have to guarantee it for a year. Some repairs are done to a higher standard than the surrounding roads.

Think Rose Street was pedestrianized about 20 years ago and hasn't had any upkeep since. Yes utilities trashed it previously, but it's never been brought up to modern standards.

I complained to the council recently about outstanding tram works on pavements round the city. They're basically saying they've been asked by shops to leave the pavements for the moment whilst they "recover from the tram works".

One thing I find ironic is Living Streets Scotland is based on Rose Street.
