Trigger's Bike

  1. So the Kaff is about ready to roll again after being out of action since a little before Christmas when I just got nervy about the brakes. Anyway, as I fitted the new V brakes (replacing the old cantis) having discovered V specific drop levers, I got to thinking. Only the frame, forks, saddle and seatpin are the same as when it was first built 6 and a half years ago.

    Bars have changed 3 times (four if you count moving to a flat bar then back to the tache); wheels are 3rd set (though the second set was an interim cheapy pair); brakes are fourth set I think (and now changed the levers, the only other original bit that was left); even the bottom bracket is in its third incarnation, and last year I changed to a single chainring 1x10 setup, ditching the front mech, and moving to a friction shifter for the rear.

    Saddest thing of the latest rebuild is the new brakes just wouldn't clear the little front rack - but I didn't use it much anyway, and it means I can mount the dynamo front light centrally, as that had always been a faff with the rack.

    The bike is totally beat up, but still with loads of life - one day I might see about a respray, but for the time being I'll be welcoming it back with a ride soon!

    I suspect someone on here will be able to beat just three of the original components left. So what frame have you got that is a 'new' bike.

    Well I know a Brompton where at least two parts of the frame aren't original!

    Seatpost probably is.

    Think you're beating me, although when I change my handlebars everything apart from the frame on my Fenix Classic will be a replacement apart from the shifters which I was going to replace but I've rotated them in about 3mm and suddenly new worlds of comfort have emerged...

    Just the seatpost on mine, as the stem ate a bolt last year and had to be sawn.

    The frame on Boyfriend of Fimm's road bike cracked. He got a new frame and (IIRC) moved everything (including the forks) over from the old bike.

    Does that count?

    On the blue bike, used as a commuter/winter bike, I've now changed everything except for the Sora brake/gear levers. It's not even blue as I changed the frame from a blue Ridgeback Horizon to a black Spa Audax.

    My AM used to be a 14 speed. Has been a 5 and 21 since and is now a 24.

    Original bits - seatpost, one gear changer and front wheel!

    I used to still have the brifters off my first ever road bike (Trek 1000), before changing them about 6 months ago when they began to fail and the rubber of the hoods was overly decomposed. They were about 12 years old at that point and were the last thing from it to die.

    Although the frame never actually died, I traded it to Recombodna and last I saw he was riding it up big mountains in France as a light tourer.

    There's plenty of old rusty Raleigh 3-speeds knocking round Embra that probably still have the original chain on them.

    My old Rockhopper originally bought in '97, died a final death last summer, the only original parts remaining were the handlebars and gear shifters. Everything else, including the frame had been replaced, the original frame having been cracked in 2003 and the co-op did a warrenty replacement and swapped parts over.

    In fact it was probably the frame replacement that did it in, I disovered a few years ago that the bottom bracket had basicall been glued in, they guys at Pedals supected that the job had been botched when the new frame was swapped over.

    My 1999 EBC Continental survived as just a pair of eight speed STI shifters until 2013. The frame went in 2006.

    My summer bike is doing a bit better. In ten years it has retained its frame, brakes, front mech, STI shifters and seatpost collar.

    My commuting bike has just the frame, forks, headset, rims(!), rear hub and seatpost from the original I bought 5 1/2 years ago.

    ...actually, on reflection, that's quite a lot of the original compared to some of the bikes on here.

    When I finally change the shifters, only the name of the original bike will remain: "blue bike"

  14. The only remaining parts of my 2008 Giant SCR2 are one brake caliper, the crankarms and the bars.

    Frame cracked - replaced under warranty by Giant Defy frame, seatpost, front forks and stem as SCR frame no longer made.
    Shifters replaced after one broke. Brake and gear cables and outers have been replaced a few times.
    Bar tape changed twice.
    Derailleurs front and rear changed after wear / damage.
    Jockey wheels replaced as worn out
    Chain / cassette / front chainrings and BB all replaced through wear
    Wheels have been replaced a few times, as have tyres.
    Front brake caliper replaced as thread stripped on attaching bolt
    Brake pads replaced countless times
    Original saddle replaced when it got sliced open after bike fell over in hallway!
    Pedals replaced with SPDs, then SPD-SLs

    Who said cycling was a cheap method of travel? ;-)

    The first bike I got when returning to cycling in 2002 was slowly fettled until all that remained of the original were the Sakae Custom handlebars on a fixed gear bike built around an old Raleigh Record Sprint frame.

    Still got those bars in my bits box. The bike they were last attached to went to the Bike Station in 2009

    The tourer I built in 2003 is still mostly original, though I will be changing the BB and chainset shortly due to a desire for lower gearing contracted last summer when wheezing up the Lecht into a headwind with full touring load.
