An unusual good word for Evans

  1. Evans isn't really my shop of choice. They've certainly got one of everything, but beyond that you're kind of scuppered, plus they keep nicking kaputnik's work on FB and the like. But sometimes needs must.

I'd rebuilt the Kaff last week, and the morning after was riding into town for lunch with a friend. I realised I'd left my cycling shoes in the car, so made do with normal shoes on the clipless pedals. I'd been toying with going back to flats on this bike anyway, it going back to true utilitarianism, and lunch was very near to Evans, so I popped in.

Being able to take your bike to the indoor Sheffield stand is a bonus. Found a decent set of pedals, went and paid. I asked (thinking this is exactly the type of place this won't work) if they had a pedal spanner I could borrow to change the pedals there and then. 'Not a problem' he replied, adding, 'Actually, do you want to give me those and I'll get rid of the packaging and get you some grease on the threads?' before checking I knew they had side-specific threads, and leaving me to it.

The ride home was much more comfy....

I've only ever had good experiences with Evans - although only ever smallish purchases. It's handily on the way to work.

Like Halfords and other larger chains, one's experience all depends on who serves you. The same applies to the bike co-op.

In fact, now I think about it. Surly this is a better compliment for a shop - where an employee "goes that extra mile" against a one-man operation where good service will be down to the owner trying to get repeat custom?

This is a bit devil's advocate really. But you see what I mean?

I've never had any problems with Evans, although mostly small purchases so far.

Best service we've had from the Bruntsfeld Bike Co-op on Sunday though. My wife is looking at new bikes and had excellent, friendly, helpful and most importantly non-patronising advice from a staff member.

She was vey interested in finding out how my wife learnt to ride a bike. She said a lot of people come into the shop wanting to learn and get a bike but were embarrassed to admit they couldn't. We mentioned the Bikeability adult training, which she hadn't heard of before.

Always had good experience with Evans (with the exception of one issue on a service but they quickly remedied that). Despite being National they are an independent with original family members still on the board (despite some PE investment).

Only issue I've had with them over the last year is going in with a surprise puncture that caught me sans-puncture repair kit. I asked if they wanted to repair it but the mechanics were too busy, so I borrowed some bits and bought an overpriced tube and went about fixing it myself. A manager came over and took the helpful staff member away to berate him for allowing me to do this with a "we don't lend out tools" thing (she thought she was far enough away but I heard most of it and could see some maddening body language)

I imagine the staff member let her finish then explained the idea of "repeat custom" So not really an issue with them but more middle management.
