I've printed some more handlebar flyers. My plan is to do the Haymarket racks one morning and one evening this week. Last year I did some chalking on the NEPN as well but I don't think I am going to have a chance to this year.

[center]I can't chalk the NEPN or WoL or RRP or Seafield until next weekend. Flyered Waverley on Friday.

    @ Sally

Any idea which politicians/candidates are planning to be at PoP?

Do you mean speaking or just attending?

Kim is in charge of the speakers. Slightly complicated by the fact that we've got two events this year

Did the Commie bike racks again last night. There don't seem to be as many bikes there at the moment; maybe it is the same number of bikes in twice as many racks...

Did as many bikes as I could at Haymarket this morning but ran out of flyers. So I may or may not have printed out some more on my work printer so that I may or may not have another go this evening...

Do you think POP is ok on a balance bike (my son, not me)?

He certainly won't be the only one!

Did some more bikes at Haymarket this morning: but I keep underestimating the number of bikes there and running out of handlebar tags! Doing the bikes on the two-deck racks is a bit of a pain too; I end up attaching the flyers to the locks as being possible to reach and a place where they might be noticed!

TRANSPORT MINISTER TO ATTEND FIRST GLASGOW PEDAL ON PARLIAMENT AS GRASSROOTS CAMPAIGN GOES NATIONWIDE

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Politicians, local and national, will be joining thousands of cyclists across the country this weekend to hear how they can make Scotland safer and cycle-friendly. With local elections looming, the sixth Pedal on Parliament will be taking place in four cities this year, with the Transport Minister Humza Yousaf agreeing to address the first ever Glasgow demonstration alongside politicians from all parties.

The grassroots campaign will be holding mass rides in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Inverness on Saturday 22nd April and in Glasgow on Sunday 23rd. Last year, the demonstrations were attended by thousands of cyclists in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. PoP recently completed a successful crowdfunding campaign to enable it to take the protests nationwide for the first time. The organisers hope to counter recent backlash against cycle lanes in East Dunbartonshire, Ayr and Edinburgh and show there is strong support for safe cycling conditions for everyone. Other politicians will be attending the various demonstrations, with speakers including Green leader Patrick Harvie, Green MSPs Alison Johnstone and John Finnie, Labour MSP Daniel Johnson, Glasgow SNP councillor Anna Richardson, Liberal Democrat MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton, and others yet to be confirmed.

Edinburgh organiser Kim Harding said, “making active travel safe and convenient for everyone would improve the lives of everyone living in Scotland, whether they realise it or not. It is long overdue that action was taken to make active travel the obvious first choice for short journeys.”

Glasgow organiser Lizzie Reather said, “Glasgow stands at a crossroad. For decades, it’s been hollowed out by urban motorways, despite having the lowest car ownership levels in Scotland. Now, finally, it looks as if it’s taking its first steps towards rebalancing its streets towards people. POP will show that there’s a huge appetite for this change in the city.”

Aberdeen organiser Henri de Ruiter said, “Cities are for people. Streets are for people. Imagine kids playing on the streets everywhere. Imagine a city where you don’t have to worry about air pollution and a city where traffic flows freely. Cities all around the world are discovering that bikes are the best solution to create friendlier and cleaner cities. Scotland should not miss out and that is why we ride.”

Inverness organiser Mark Falconer said, “Whilst we are all aware of the pressures on public funding, any investment in active travel will pay for itself over and over again. It truly is a win-win situation. Inverness seems to continually grow and our ambitions to provide a safe and well thought out travel plan should keep pace.”

    ENDS

    Notes for editors:
Pedal on Parliament is a grassroots cycle campaign that has brought thousands of cyclists to the streets of Edinburgh each year to call for a cycle-friendly Scotland.

Our home printer appears to have run out of ink. Ahem. I may or may not have used my work printer this morning... I have some time to do the Haymarket racks on the way home.

It feels like there's been a lot less leafleting, chalking and so forth this year. Hopefully most attendees from previous years are on the email list or Facebook or something.

Yes, it has felt quiet :-(

Some chalking this week would be great if people can manage it. There are lots of people who 'know' about POP but don't think about it all the time, and who have to be reminded ...

It does seem to be picking up on social media this week a bit but there's no substitute for physically getting out and plastering the town in POP posters ...

This is what I posted last week in a reply to Sally -

    People will come.

    In large numbers.

A higher figure than last year isn't a necessary sign of 'success'.

PoPs in other cities is a major achievement.

You will stress however well things are going!

I'll leaflet and flyer the George Square area today. has anyone done the Pleasance bike racks?

in previous years I have also flyered Sciennes, Gillespies and Sick kids, aswell as bikes parked on the roads around there and in bruntsfield. (and we had posters etc in Laidback's window in Marchmont). suspct this area is less ell-covered now?

would be great if someone could do some leafleting/flyering in the Bruntsfield and Marchmont areas.

@SRD: I can do the Pleasance racks this evening, need to go past the Cycle Service anyway.

EDIT: Might also manage to hand out flyers to arriving cyclists at KB on Friday AM. Anyone want to join?

@frenchy - sounds great. thanks. anyone want to email the UoE buglist people and ask them to circulate an email abut POP? I've done it for the past 5 years and I think it would be good if it came from someone else for a change.

@hopey - anything goes! that's the beauty of POP. if you want to be 'trendy' avoid hiviz and helmets. fancydress costume always good for pics. handmde posters encouraged.

Edinburgh council is looking for a volunteer to go to PoP as their 20mph 'reducer' and with their 20mph lollipop stick.

I guess you would be walking, though since PoP travels at under 20mph you could presumably take a few lifts in a rickshaw or anything else suitable and pedal-powered!

Or you could just be at Holyrood as people arrive and during the speeches.

Below is a message from Eileen Hewitt at the Council, with more details. Contact her direct if potentially interested.

The costume is ideal for someone who is around 5 foot 8 inches tall and fairly slim build. The costume head has a battery operated fan and would say 1 – 1.5 hours is probably long enough in the costume. If it’s not too late, please use the 20mph email address for anyone wanting to volunteer 20mph@edinburgh.gov.uk or my email address Eileen.hewitt@edinburgh.gov.uk is fine too. I will be in Waverley Court this week if anyone wants to make arrangements to come in and collect the costume this week.

Flyered 400 bikes yesterday around KB, Pleasance, Chambers St, Moray House and a few in George Sq.

@SRD I will email the BUG people today.

Put 48 flyers on bikes at Haymarket and then ran out. There were maybe 4-5 old flyers there (i.e. bikes that hadn't moved since I did them last week).

I estimated that I was at least 10 flyers short. So that's 60-70 bikes in those racks. How much space would 60 - 70 parked cars occupy?

I also emailed the UoE BUG folk yesterday (ahead of SRD's request) - to be honest I couldn't find their previous emails, so didn't assume they would do it. So I wrote them some text to cut and paste...

I chalked Restalrig path, Seafield shared use pavement, Seafield prom, Porty prom and the path up to Holyrood Park from the Innocent on my way in this morning. Slowest commute ever! I have enough chalk to do 1 bit of WoL path on my way home. I've also flyered bikes mostly in and around Summerhall and surroundings. Does anyone know if the bike co-op/other bike shop near Meadows still have a supply of posters for distribution?

Are there any A4 posters this year? I have put several A3 posters up at Heriot-Watt but I would quite like an A4 to dispaly on my workplace wall to fit with the last couple.

Yes, I got some A4s from the Bike Station.

    Or there's a pdf here: http://pedalonparliament.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/2017-PoP-A4-CMYKCropped.pdf

And an editable template for feeder rides here: http://pedalonparliament.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/2017-PoP-A4-feeder-editable-4.pdf
