@Hankchief and I have just attached flyers to the 143 bikes in our work bike store. Colleagues are now also the target of a sustained publicity campaign from HC on our internal social media channels.

If I manage to get up in time, I'm planning on leafleting on the towpath tomorrow morning around half eightish. I'm thinking that the towpath diversion at the top of Gibson Terrace might work because people will have to slow down so might be more willing to take a leaflet. Any thoughts?

Aiming to be at the north east corner of KB around half eight tomorrow morning (but realistically closer to quarter to nine), if anyone wants to join me handing out flyers to arriving cyclists. I have plenty of flyers.

POP is being publicised by the PCS Union. This is from today's bulletin.
"Pedal on Parliament is a grassroots led demonstration whose aim is to promote cycling and active travel. The aim is to make Scotland a truly cycling friendly nation and to achieve this we have developed the following manifesto We call on all Scotland’s politicians, of all parties, to sign up to the following eight point manifesto in order to make cycling a realistic choice for everyone, from eight to eighty – and show the rest of the UK that cycling doesn’t just belong on continental Europe, but in the country where it all began:
1) Proper funding for cycling. 2) Design cycling into Scotland’s roads. 3) Safer speeds where people live, work and play 4) Integrate cycling into local transport strategies 5) Sensible road traffic law and enforcement 6) Reduce the risk of HGVs to cyclists and pedestrians 7) A strategic and joined-up programme of road user training 8) Solid research on cycling to support policy-making
GEC member Mark Falconer writes: I only see benefits in active travel. I myself find it a great way to maintain my fragile health and relax after a hectic day. I attended a Pedal on Parliament a couple of years back and rode from Dunfermline to Edinburgh. It was a great experience and I was really impressed with the wide spectrum of people and bikes in attendance, so when the call went out for other cities to get involved I jumped at the chance.
Pedal on Parliament began in Edinburgh and has now spread across the country, including Glasgow and Inverness for the first time this year. It’s all happening this weekend: 22nd April for Edinburgh, Inverness and Aberdeen, 23rd April for Glasgow. Why not come along and join us? if you can’t why not take a few minutes to let your elected representatives know what you think. See http://pedalonparliament.org/ for details."Posted 7 years ago # -
I flyered around 40-50 cyclists and 10-20 pedestrians between 08:10 and 08:50 this morning at Gibson Terrace towpath diversion with help from gembo for most of that time. The majority of cyclists appeared to know nothing about PoP but a fair number of them said that they would come or at least that they hoped to. It felt worthwhile.

Great, thank you for all your flyering and publicising efforts! Hope to see all of you tomorrow! Do we have a special thread for POP spots?

This may be the daftest question I've ever asked but I'm planning to make a day of it after the event and get my 50k ride for the month done. If I come head to toe in lycra will I stand out like a sore thumb? Past photos seem to show everyone casually dressed.

If I come head to toe in lycra will I stand out like a sore thumb?
Definitely not.

Heard today that a friend was knocked off his bike and had his leg broken. Just to remind us all why we are doing this.

If anyone was wondering if is possible to complete the Edinburgh POP ride twice in one session. Well I know it can be done. It helps to not be herding children or pandas.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Alas, looks like I won't make it. Again. Too many child-related responsibilities clashing with the timescale tomorrow.
Have a good one, folks.

Went up the High Street at around 5 this evening. Still an enormous great hole in the road outside the Radisson (I'd guess about 2m deep, 4m wide and 10m long). Gas pipes still being installed and various cranes, site huts and other plant taking up the full width of the road.
SGN say the road will be reopened for PoP "from 12 noon", which seems a bit too close for comfort. I imagine they could reopen a narrow channel along the side of the works - this would need pretty careful marshalling. Alternatively, they could chuck huge steel plates over the hole - not great for cycling downhill. One to watch tomorrow as I think this will need careful handling.

Tweeted the four of my local candidates who are on twitter, and three of them will be coming tomorrow, the other had a prior family arrangement. Really impressed by how the POP team have made it a must-attend event for local political candidates.

Stupendous turnout. So good I had trouble seeing anyone but managed to wave to a few folk. Well done all organisers, volunteers marshalls etc. Brilliant stuff.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Yes, great turn-out. I thought the speeches were better this year. Good to hear that progress is being made.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Was worried that turnout looked low at quarter to 11, but think more people were on the grass along middle meadow walk.
Fantastic day.
@Klaxon's flag was great.

I thought the speeches were better this year.
Yes, it did seem we had people who really got what we were asking for.
Does a video of the speeches from the first POP still exist?
Be interesting to hear the difference.
Posted 7 years ago # -
It didn't look as though there were as many people. But the police were saying it was the biggest turn out yet...
Posted 7 years ago # -
Well done folks. Good showing from everyone.

Last year the queue went along to swing park at far end of meadows. Never managed that this year but when we headed off the front was up at forest road and the back was in same place. So bunching and then spreading and late joining increased numbers. Turnout great but down on last year is my estimate. More polis than last year?
Posted 7 years ago # -
More polis than last year?
Aye, think so. Maybe helps them count more accurately, too.Posted 7 years ago # -
I thought there was less lycra and hi-viz and a higher proportion of "ordinary" clothing this year.
Regardless of final numbers it was a great turnout. I've a feeling the Glasgow one is going to be large tomorrow.

Big thanks to the many forumers here contributing to the marshaling.
I had customer over from Dundalk and he was thrilled to take part in it.
Saw fimm with Brompton on High St and many others. Didn't realise that the 20 plenty guy waving was Mark from Spokes.... must be hot in that Michelin style clothing!
Lovely seeing the waves of families on bikes going back out of town later. I had to get back to shop to hand-over another trike so couldn't stay.
Dave McCraw was sighted with Claire and twins as were many other Daves...Posted 7 years ago # -
Thanks to all who helped organise the event. Had a great day, met a lot of great people.

Yes, thanks to everyone organising and marshalling. We were very well looked after on the Harrison Park feeder ride. Micro luath was delighted with all the extra flags attached to his trailer, thanks @SRD! (I think?)
Posted 7 years ago # -
I may have helped you attach a laminated pop flyer? Fimm was responsible for mostof the flags.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Went round the Skelf skills loop after, with micro neddie on the back, which was, er, interesting & slightly mad. Another taggy was going round too& the pilot said he was glad he wasn't the "only one "

Leith Feeder setting off. Several more joined at Lochend Park for a total of over 20
A jolly time had by all. The route is probably one of the most laid back of all the feeders with only 600m on what one would call a 'busy' road. Probably narrowly pipped by Portobello being able to nip straight up to the start of the Innocent.
Once up at the Meadows Alex was perfect head marshal and the organisers had arranged plenty of flags + cable ties to hand out to everyone. Council were great with road closures.
Special shoutout to whoever provided the much improved PA system this year that didn't cut out constantly. It was well audible at the back
Job well done!
