ruggtomcat: "Was wondering where to point out I have never owned a car, or a license. Im an ex-courier (hence the interest in city cycling) and go to everything within 150 miles by bike :)" Yes, quite normal then.

Min I'll come along and cycle around in circles diverting the nutters and you can all have morning coffee in peace.

'the guy with the bent nail/chair leg, the guy who fell asleep in the cycle path and the guy with the air gun'

Does everyone else know who these gentlemen are? The Three Riders of the Cyclopalypse?

IWRATS Thank god none of them was riding a bike. But I encountered them all at different times on the stretch of cycle path between Duudingston Road West and the (ex) Big W car park. I once rode that section with Laidback who was on a recumbent and we had to stop because some kids had blocked the path with bits of wood. I would have grumpily detoured onto the grass but Laidback stopped, chatted and persuaded them to move the obstacles, all the while explaining the superiority of recumbent bikes. Maybe I'm just like the boy in the Sixth Sense: I see weird people.

Well shall we set a date then?

    Friday morning one time perhaps?

It would be good to meet members of this forum, but

    a) I have to be at work at 08h30
    b) I'm rubbish at getting up in summer and only really get going at gunpoint in winter

Thus squeezing the time available from both ends. @recombodna - I am happy to have amused. I think of that advert every time a roadie beats me up Minto Street. They may be quicker but I know they're suffering for it.

As an aside - anyone know the chap I saw this morning cycling a recumbent tricycle up Chesser Avenue with an off-road lighting rig blazing? I fear he won't last long unless he learns to keep it in a straight line.

Friday the 15th is good for me. Remember to bring your CCE Top Trumps card! Or have your categories and scores printed on a T-shirt. :)

In defence of "roadies", "road" saddles have come a long way over the last few years. The Prologo and the Fizik on my road bikes are very comfortable and result in no John Wayne walk even after 100 miles.

    Friday the 15th

I have to be over at South Gyle and at my desk for 9-ish, but that leaves time to drop by, say hello, down an espresso c. 8AM before asking engineering for Warp 9 and ripping a hole in the space-time-St. John's Road continuum

@anth at work - (why do you have to put that '@' there? Is it like 'Ms/Mrs/Mr for the internet?) what an excellent find, thanks.

@kaputnik - I didn't mean to demean roadies. I like to 'win' my commute but usually wind up trailing in the wake of anyone willing to commit to thin tyres and a stiff frame. Takes all sorts and I never met a bicyclist yet didn't respond to a cheery 'good morning', though I didn't do well myself this morning. Fell asleep at a green light and the gentleman behind addressed me as 'pal' which led to my being taken momentarily aback.

  15. @iwrats (I think the @ just comes from Twitter, showing a comment is directed @ that person...) not so much a 'find' as a 'designed' in the early days of Citycycling.co.uk. Not the best t-shirt I had for sale, but sold a few!

I know, just road saddles :) I certainly like to think that I at least look wore comfortable than those with the SSO that came with their BSO wedged in intimate proximity to their tender parts!

Unfortunately I have met plenty of bicyclists who fail to respond to a cheery hello. It's a shame...

But this is Edinburgh, Kaputnik. "Hello!" "Whuh..eh..what? Why are you talking to me?" :>

Anyway, the 27th would be more appropriate. I could make either if we met 8ish rather than 9ish.

If we were going to have some sort of forum anniversary thing it might be better to have it in the evening so that more people can go rather than an on-the-way-to-work which is not on the way to work for most people?

I reckon we should just go for the 15th and say 8ish. Otherwise it'll never happen. :-p

    "Otherwise it'll never happen"

I think there are some people who like the idea of (occasionally) adding ten minutes to their commute for a casual meet - with coffee.

A 'birth' event is not mutually exclusive.

    how's this for a plan;

15th - 8AMish - bean, boiling water and (optional) milk-based beverages. Enroute of your commute (hey, that rhymes!)

27th - eveningPMish - grain / grape-based beverages. Optional bicycling to/from, although from may be slightly wobblier...

"The well known bike rider, Kaput
    nik suggested a meetup enroute
    with intent much to quaff
    hot water and coff
ee to brighten the daily commute."

Sounds like a plan to me. :)

Is there a 'cycle pub'? If not, I vote for Dagda on Buccleuch St, unless that is considered too central/ meadows oriented.

I vote for any pub which has a beer garden where you can park the bikes! (to save carrying a lock...;-))

The 'obvious' one is the Pear Tree - though I'm not sure about this time of year...

There's also Spoon - large cafe with flexible seating - serves alcohol & food too.

    Cloisters?

Caley Sample Rooms would also be convenient for those of us along the south-west axis. It has big tables, decent beer, and okay food. We might even be coax our old friend spytfyre out....

Cloisters is good if you can get one of the larger tables by the window. The railings are generally covered in the bikes of cycling clientèle anyway. It has a great selection of ales. But if you can't get one of the 2 or 3 larger tables you're a bit snookered. Caley Sample would be a good 2nd choice.

So long as it's got a few real ales on tap and somewhere secure and visible to lock the rides then I'm easy.

K'nik - given where you live, you should try Dagda sometime. A nice, quiet small pub. Not full of students, but Uni types welcome. Usually a good mix of people. Excellently kept ales. The pub quiz (?Tuesdays) comes well-recommended.
