Working in Paris next week at the SIAL food fair, which looks like it's going to coincide with a general strike by the lovely people at both the SNCF and RATP. Meaning no metro, no Transilien.

Has anyone ever cycled within paris and outwith the Peripherique, and is this a viable trip to do (can't Velib it sadly as there's nowhere to dock outside the Peri)

Question 2, is this taking me through any particularly dodgy areas :)

Would be something along the lines of this, 12 miles:

actually, looking at the map, it takes in such lovely spots as:

Aulnay-sous-Bois (French pronunciation: [ɔlnɛsubwa]) is a commune in the northeastern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 13.9 km (8.6 miles) from the centre of Paris.

In October and November 2005, it gained national and international attention as one of the focuses of the French suburb riots.

Oh well, I won't be there at night. :)

  3. Cycled in Paris (on a Velib) and it was a pleasure. Strangest thing was getting used to riding on the right (strangely I have no problem adapting to driving on the right). As for the areas, I've not a clue I'm afraid...

Just wish they had a Velib drop off there, would make life a lot easier! Although for that distance, it would be nice to have something a bit lighter/zippier.

Finding the bike rental idea more appealing the more I think about it, would save me the crush of a trip on and back on the RER every day :/.

Could be one of those things where the idea is harder than the actual doing, It's something I've never done the times I've been working in Cologne (cos the public transport there is a pleasure) and I've always kind of regretted it.

    Hmm.

France 24: French unions call for new day of protests over pension reform
French unions have called for a new day of protests on October 16 against government plans to overhaul the country's pension system and raise the retirement age from 60 to 62.

Looks like it may be an option. Found a non-velib rental company in the Maire who've offered me a bike for €60 for the 5 days.

Just checking with my hotel if there's somewhere to stick it of an evening...

Have you seen the size of your average Parisian hotel lift/staircase!?! Plus scary Maitre D'Hotel makes that an option I'm not instantly entertaining :)

"Have you seen the size of your average Parisian hotel lift/staircase!?!"

Yes, but I'd assumed you'd be in some sort of budget/conference hotel.

Ask them what the advise for customers with cars (there must be a few).

nah, got the opportunity to book m'self (within our budget) so thought I'd go for somewhere in the thick of it (with good transport connections ;) )

Stayed in the Park Inn Roissy (near the expo) last time, and though the rooms were big I did get a bit bored (or found myself on very long trips into town of an evening)
