Being overtaken while turning right

Earlier today I was overtaken by an Midlothian Skip Hire lorry whilst turning right from the traffic lights at Stewart's Melville onto Ravelston Dykes. It scared the living daylights out of me.

I'm quite frequently overtaken at this turning - usually I turn a blind eye to it; although it's hardly very polite, there is usually enough room.

I'm curious to know others' experiences of being overtaken whilst turning right... does anyone know the legality of it?

    Cheers!

    Highway Code rule 167
DO NOT overtake where you might come into conflict with other road users. For example

approaching or at a road junction on either side of the road
    ...
when a road user is indicating right, even if you believe the signal should have been cancelled. Do not take a risk; wait for the signal to be cancelled

"Do not" means it is advisory rather than a legal requirement.

(If that's the junction I think it is, that's the place where Boyfriend and I stopped at the red light in a car to go straight on and were then (once we were stationary) overtaken by a driver who ran the red to turn right...)

Out of interest, how is a cyclist expected to 'cancel' a signal?

Put their arm down? I would keep my 'right indicator' on for as long as practical when turning right, consistent with using the brakes, steering etc.

I have noticed that when I'm in a car which is turning right, I get very nervous when I see another car that looks as if it might overtake because I forget that drivers can actually see cars...

that's the place where Boyfriend and I stopped at the red light

i admire your ongoing stubbornness in not switching term to "partner" instead of boyfriend.

    its an inevitable process, though.

I got an apologetic email from the company saying they had a meeting this morning 'to reiterate this point to all of our drivers and to remind them of their responsibilities as drivers for our Company'.

Overtaken by something also making a right-turn: Frequently overtaken whilst turning right going from West Approach-Lothian Road or Gilmore Place-Bruntsfield Place or Restalrig Road South (Smokey Brae)-London Road (Wolseley Place) at Jock's Lodge. More rare on the narrower St Leonard's Street-Salisbury Road turn but the odd keen driver has attempted it.
Overtaken by something going straight on and ignoring the right-turn/road positioning/signal: Willowbrae Road turning into Duddingston Row.

I've been overtaken by a taxi driver, who then turned into the same road as I was aiming for.

His defense when questioned by police, "I thought he had forgotten to cancel his indication"!?!

So, even if you do leave your arm out for as long as possible, it's still no guarantee.

Recently, though, it's been people trying to overtake as we're both turning right, that is, I turn right into the left hand lane, they turn right into the oncoming lane parallel to me. They then attempt to box me in at the parked car a couple of lengths from the junction.

I'm tempted to just give up, and simply turn into that road on the wrong side of the road, just like a driver...

But even in a car, I prefer to perform the turn properly, as oncoming traffic is only visible that way - those swooping into the wrong side could easily meet someone coming!

Roibeard, how old were you when you discovered this affliction? You know, leaving limbs hanging at right angles and forgetting about them?

@Dougal - I'm not sure, clearly I'm unaware of it, and others have been too polite to bring it up in conversation!

Not that often. Heading out of Longniddry the speed limit goes from 30 to 40 to NSLA in about a quarter of a mile. Well inside the 40 zone I checked behind before indicating to turn right. One car approaching but a long way off. I indicated, pulled out and entered the right turn filter. In the same time, the driver had accelerated, pulled out to give me a huge overtake and was now doing an emergency brake across the hatched zone behind me. Sometimes drivers can try to give cyclists too wide a pass.

@sallyhinch I was assuming the same, but does that mean that a cyclist sends mixed messages to other road users if they have to stop their indication at any point due to braking and steering, e.g. to avoid a pothole etc?

I'd hope that road position would suggest that you were still turning right, but I guess to some drivers bikes are one big mixed message ...

I should add that the lorry driver was turning right too. So we ended up doing the turn sort of parallel to each other (this is when he nearly hit me).

I think some others are referring to being overtaken by vehicles going straight on (also bad).

For last year I have been turning. Left at this T junction. At school drop off time. Mad traffic snarled I have the whole lane to myself all the way down ravelston dykes as not enough room to pass with Mary erskines traffic tail to tail. Very pleasing

Turning right I rarely go that way.
