I've sold bicycles to that sheriff! (Long time ago.)

I passed them at the eastern end of the Alloa-Dunfermline path at about 11.30 this morning and they seemed to be making good progress.

I did see them again at about 13.30 at the north end of Inverkeithing and they seemed unsure of where they were going. Some in each of three directions off a roundabout!

I hope they do enjoy themselves despite the weather.

There was a similar scheme in Dundee many years back. My friend worked as a horse riding instructor and one time I went down to stay with her, a group of ex-prisoners were sent to the riding school. My friends boss was a bit worried and when she saw them, she decided to send me out with them too. (I am sure anyone who has met me will agree I am more than a match for 10 burly male criminals). Anyway, long story short they were absolutely brilliant fun. I hope it worked for some of them at least but we will never know.

    Cycling QC in the news...
    « on: April 27, 2010, 06:51:20 PM »
I was most interested to hear just now on the TV news that the QC presenting the case on behalf of the SNP re the BBC election debates is one Mungo Bovey. The must be the same Mungo who I used to know as a clubmate in the Edinburgh Road Club and who was chair (or something similar) of Triathlon Scotland.

On the one hand, horse-police use horses. On the other, so did highwaymen.

#upcycle is a one off event cycling thru deprived communities aiming to change attitudes about violence - it's not a training programme.

Day 1 Glasgow (Gorbals, Possilpark, Ferguslie Park) then on to Hawkhill, Alloa.
Day 2 Alloa to Edinburgh (Craigmilar).
    Day 3 Edinburgh to Dundee
    Day 4 Dundee to Aberdeen
    Day 5 Aberdeen to Fraserburgh
We will be joined along the route by high profile “guest” cyclist, who will add their influential voices to the positive messages we want to communicate.

    obree helping nice.

I have found bike maintenance to be a good way to deliver one to one work with teengae boys in the past. Much more chatty as you try to fix their BMX

see also driving with teenage passengers when you do not look them in the eye and are chatting incidentally (much more forthcoming)

So I think maybe the cycling trip might be a possible way of intervening.

I thought all cyclists were scofflaws anyway? I can't keep up with the myriad media portrayals.

I also know that Sheriff / QC through ERC. He's a thoroughly decent guy and very supportive in the grass-roots of cycling as a sport. Although it wasn't until much later I found out what he actually does for a day job - lycra is a great social leveller!
