I agree; if today doesn't put you off then you are on to a winner. I had meant it tongue-in-cheek :-).

Wife and MIL said to me this morning "You're not cycling in that are you" to which I replied "it's just a bit of rain".

I find it ok when I 'know' its going to rain and I am prepared for it (e.g. dress appropriately). It's when I haven't packed my waterproof and the heavens open when I get annoyed (for not preparing properly)

  3. I got the 'you didn't cycle in this did you?' query from someone in one of the other companies in the office this morning. Today was damp, but not windy, hailing, snowing, driving rain, all of which I'd still rather ride to work in than suffer standing around waiting for the box, or locked in the car listening to breakfast radio. More often than not get looked at in a very funny way for suggesting such a radical notion.

It wasn't that bad out there at all. I was glad I'd worn waterproof trousers, but the spare pair of socks I packed just in case are still in my bag.

People are hilarious about you getting a little bit wet. You'd think we'd all turned into the Wicked Witch of the West... I mean, one of the privileges of living in the 21st century is that you get to come in to a warm office or house or whatever and you are not going to die of pneumonia from getting a little bit damp.

Hopefully this won't be the Friday which puts people off before next week, when there will anyway be some returns to pre-holiday morning routines, with some schools going back and so on. Significantly fewer racks in use this morning than the rest of this week.

I was cursing myself for forgetting the spare pair when I suddenly remembered while riding in, and then once at the destination realised there wasn't really any need. As you say, it wasn't really that bad out there this morning... Though I can imagine for someone starting out it would be somewhat off-putting.

I'd get wetter walking the 10 minutes to the nearest bus stop and then from the bus stop to work.

Days like this are miserable on the bus/train. Overcrowded/steamy/smelly/damp/claustrophobic and thoroughly unpleasant.

The bike is fine, once you are wet and aren't going to get any wetter, there is a zen like moment. Had this when doing long distance walking in New Zealand. Once you had your first river crossing, your boots were wet and you just got on with the next 41...

Agree with WC that it is wind and driving rain/sleet/snow which may put me off, especially strong crosswinds on the bridge.

    Now with added legal section

I'm sure it's perfectly accurate (I didn't write it), but if you think there should be additions -

The easiest way to be put off cycling to work is to jump straight on your bike without being prepared. Here what to think about before you start:

It's getting lighter at both ends of the day and the weather is set fair for the week...

+ added bonus of a couple of bikes up for grabs in the Edinburgh Cycle Challenge

It must be worth nudging a few colleagues, friends and family that this Friday would be an optimal day to try cycle commuting...

Seems that https://cyclefridays.wordpress.com has existed for two years now.

It was crowdsourced from CCE posts and info, with great suggestions from CCEers.

I think it’s been useful for some people - I know CCEers have pointed it out to NotYetCyclers.

I am aware that it’s hardly been revised or updated since it was first launched.

Also the associated Twitter account doesn’t get used to promote it that often.

Anyone any ideas for revising/improving or promoting wider?

It probably needs a bit more on electric bikes as these are more widely viewed as (maybe) a way to get more people cycling to work.

The New Year is about to happen so some people will be pretending ‘this is the year I will cycle to work’ (January 3rd is unlikely to be the best day to start).

Next year is supposed to (finally) see Edinburgh getting a proper bike hire scheme - complete with electric bikes - which c/should get a lot more people cycling.

    Ideas?

    Offers of any help?

(I’m sure some CCEers won’t be partying full-on for the next two weeks.)

Any fresh success stories from was-not-are-now-cyclists to be harvested and posted?

    Good idea.

There is an ‘are you new to cycling’ thread, but anecdotes/testimonials appear in various places.

Hi there, chdot sent me a message about this, from another thread on the forum. My other half is now a regular cyclist - he rides to work every day and uses his bike for a fair number of everyday trips. If you're looking for case studies or examples, I can certainly ask him if he would be happy to share his cycling story?

Perhaps you could get Anna Richardson of Glasgow council to submit something too?

"3 years ago today I bought my first (adult) bike, and wobbled nervously on its first outing. This year I have pedalled 2,600km (mainly in 5k commuting chunks), and addressed the @CyclingScotland national conference. This bike has quite literally changed my life"
