Canal to Charlotte Sq.- route help

I often use the towpath and sometimes I want to get to Charlotte Square.

I know about the Loudons/Widows/EICC path, but once you are over the WAR bridge and into Rutland Sq, where does one go next? Rutland St is one way (southbound only) and if you go via Canning Street through to Shandwick place, you are faced with a "No Right Turn" (which is ignored by most taxis and delivery drivers). I have been walking across the crossing to get to Stafford Street legally, then remounting and continuing.

Am I missing something? Is there a way of getting from NCN 75 to NCN 1 without dismounting that I don't know about?

Any help gratefully received. Thank you

  2. The easiest way is Fountainbridge - Semple Street - Lothian Road - Princes street

It has its drawbacks though. The last section of towpath to Fountainbridge is rubbish cobbles. Even on a bike you can get snarled up from Semple Street to Lothian Road because of deliveries on Morrison Street and lane switching cars.

Thanks for that. I do ride Lothian Road solo, but I forgot to add that sometimes I carry a small passenger and then I don't ride LR.

@chug you aren't missing anything. There is no way of doing this legally, and I think your walk across to Stafford St is the best you can do.

If I were Edinburgh dictator, I would have a properly protected route along Fountainbridge and Lothian Road, and at the bottom of Lothian Road, I would design a cycle friendly junction that allowed bikes to turn left into Shandwick Place and to proceed diagonally left into Queensferry Road and Hope St, and then into Charlotte Square and George St.
