  1. There have been a few threads on the go about chdot's new site, and the various bits and pieces on it. Over a coffee last week I figured I could help out by interviewing folk about what got them into cycling, what they like about it, advice to asps on etc, writing up those interviews, and taking some photies of the interviewees.

It would be nice to get a few to start with, and I thought a thread to basically get potential interviewees would be good, but also anyone else who wants to interview making offers of times and places!

So next week I'm back on the bike and could meet folk on commutes, at PY etc etc etc before 8.30ish, or after 5, or indeed at lunchtimes. Who fancies baring their soul first?

    "chdot's new site"

Nah, it really is a CCE site, I've just 'orchestrated' its existence.

I'm sure you've seen some good stuff on other thread.

Short YouTubes with a 'this is what I ride/wear and why' would also be good.

Happy to "tell all" in exchange fame densely-packed brown envelopes personal satisfaction of a job well done.

But I leave the toon by 7.45 normally and don't return until 6pm so I appreciate this will seem a less attractive option.

  7. Excellent, kappers I basically pass on my way; dougal, happy to arrange an early morning rendez-vous; gembo is that an offer to keep your clothes on?

And aye, was thinking short YouTube also good, and will chase up folk on the various threads. :)

Will probably start PMing folk next week to organise times and places.

Yipyip. My commute can intersect with yours easily enough.

  9. As an added incentive folk will get a nice photo portrait of themselves for nowt which they can use for profile pics, cake decoration, lifesize cutouts, that kind of thing.

    Ta wingpig! :)

Happy to be interviewed. Can't promise coherency however. My route goes from Gilmerton Rd through meadows to Cameron toll way but happy to take lengthy detours.

Think I'd volunteered on the last thread and happy to do so again. Commute in from Dunfermline to St Andrews Sq most days.

I'd be happy to be interviewed and have my photie taken for any promo purposes (although whether anyone else might be happy with my photo is not for me to say!). My Edinburgh commuting route route is from Musselburgh to Leith, although I can 'take the scenic route' and come up by the Innocent. Alternatively I require very little persuasion to go for a ride at lunchtime.

Happy to help - PY before 8am suits me, or after work (6pm ish, location to be discussed).
(Particularly if I can get a good photo of the WiSoB for my blog) ;-)

I do a short commute but around town quite a bit during the day on a beefy MTB in shirt and jeans/shorts and sunnies. Might be a good example of "wear anything"?

I work at rutland square (not far from you I know) so we could do a lunch date (non romantic)

I'd be happy to help as well.

I commute most days of the week from South Queensferry to Dundee Street (via Newbridge) and then home via Ratho/ Winchburgh. I leave the house at 7.30 am and leave work about 5.10pm.

I've been pondering whether the 'routes' section would be more helpful/inspiring if real people described their real routes so that people could see that Susan/Peter* do a simpler journey to what they are planning.

Haven't quite figured out how it would be best to be shown - some sort of (interactive/colour coded) map with detailed routes would be best.

It would be helpful (although not compulsory) if those doing videos were prepared to share their detailed route and explain why they have settled on it. Once we see what coverage we have, it might be that some camera shy are also required to cover the main routes / directions.

    What do people think?

Maybe a few example shortest-route versus route-actually-taken, to show how a few tweaks and a little extra on-map distance can make something much more pleasant, particularly for beginners/the nervous/the inexperienced?

I can offer an example of that, wingpig, at the Livingston end of my commute (though I have to confess that I take the direct route and do battle with 40mph traffic and pinch points rather than go the long way round. But then I'm strange/lazy...)

  22. Isn't half the fun finding and trying new routes?

I have a directish default route for when flex time is tight. I have a fair few options depending on the weather, how I feel and sometimes I just make my route up as I go along!

My direct route to work is just under 9 miles. That is not enough and also quite hilly.

I have a route I do on my MTB (SQ old railway to Newbridge along A8 paths and up gogar Stn Road to the canal and then into Fountainbridge (13.5 miles). On the way home I do canal to Broxburn A89, then back into Newbridge and up the path to South Queensferry. (19 miles). Both routes have very little interaction with traffic. I vary this if weather is bad and the paths are likely top be too muddy.

On the road bike, I do B800 down to Kirkliston, Bug Alley to Newbridge, then A8 all the way in on the road. (11.5 miles)

On way home A71 to Hermiston, then down the back roads to Ratho, then up over winchburgh and into Queensferry from the west. Also about 19 miles.

Every now and then I change my route for a bit to spice things up.

Isn't half the fun finding and trying new routes?

Yes, but not in the first week...

One of my 'problems' with changing from a motor vehiclist to a cyclist is that in my first 5 years living in Edinburgh I learnt how to get places by the main roads that I would drive / ride the bus along and that my natural inclination was to cycle the same routes with scary/off-putting results.

From running stands at work, route advice is THE hot topic for newbies and the most popular page on the new site.

I think that hearing some of the thought processes about route selection that people used to get to their route is no bad thing and allows the newbie to make their own decision about what works best for them.

My route into cycling routes was the opposite of Hankchief, I started on very heavy EBC special that has lasted to this day and was good for WoL path and canal towpath, Balerno to leith, small on road section at Stockbridge through canonmills but rarely any real motoring mayhem.

Landslides and mud forced me onto the roads after a couple of years, by which time I was fairly confident but with a never take anything for granted look the bar stewards right in the eye shoulder checking attitude.

My standard commute in term time is straight down the road now, though if dry the joy of the WoL path is a temptation, also good if very windy as in valley. Canal towpath to Herriot watt also an option. When actually at work and cycling between places i use NEPN and roads. Again will go the long way round every time if I am not in a hurry. Getting out of the traffic is my main reason but avoiding hills where possible also features.
