  1. This morning....

"It's getting a bit colder in the mornings as well"

"I know, soon you'll not be able to cycle in."

    "Oh I'll still cycle."

"What, in the dark and the rain and everything?"

"Yeah, always do. I've cycled through a foot of snow in the past."

"Well I hope you've got good lights."

"Yep, got the dynamo lights on so I never forget them*."

    "That's really brave..."

*must get them connected up again, have a fault somewhere along the line...

    "That's really brave..."

Non-cyclers seem to like that line.

They may even be genuinely in awe/admire you - but WHY??

OK the "foot of snow" makes you eccentric/extreme.

But people are scared of cold/dark?

    Seem to be.

Should 'we' ignore them, pity them, glory in our "brave" status, or carry on trying to persuade people that simple things like warm/appropriate clothes are 'all' that's needed.

Are people who mention 'bravery' complete non-cyclists or just 'fair weather" ones?

Better to start as a 'sunny days only' bike commuter than not at all.

  5. I do try to make a point of it not actually being that brave - this morning I pointed out that I can't stand the bus in winter with the coughing and sniffling and steamed up windows.

steveo, I'm gonna be trying out some embrocation. Ooh, stingy stingy. Though not sure how convenient it would be for commuting, nor comfy in the office.

I was cycling to work at 5:45 this morning (eugh, don't ask), and braced myself for a cold start after yesterday's chill.
Ended up a sweaty puddle at work - it was remarkably mild.

I'm sure the sweet scent of herbs and spices would go down great in the office.

According to KB it was about 10 *early* this morning and 6 yesterday.

Yes, I get the "oh my goodness you got wet" like I'm going to melt or something. People are so protected from the weather these days, unless you choose to go out in it.

"unless you choose to go out in it"

I wonder if these comments are from 'normal' people who habitually drive from screen to screen and 'don't do outdoors' or are they 'proper outdoor people' who use boots or skis or even mountain bikes?

    Anemometer broken again, I see.

I wonder if I'll have to make some concession to normal-appropriate clothing on school-run days through the winter, when the first ten-fifteen minutes of my journey will have to be at child-cycle pace rather than normal sweat-factory-despite-wearing-a-T-shirt pace?

Is that like the weather stick, Anemometer broken = seriously windy?

    normal-appropriate clothing on school-run days

That and hanging around for 20 minutes having left loads of time for them being slow only to discover they want to go fast that day.

The slabs on the garden path were quite cold underfoot this morning when I took my green bin out for its last outing as the landfill bin, but there was only a slight chill to my index fingers which wore off after the first couple of miles.

I'm "brave" to the point of stupidity as far as cycling in the winter , having fallen a few times due to ice on the roads...

That said, I'm fighting the fear of subjecting my lovely new (as of spring 2015) bike to the abuse of winter commuting...

Keep telling myself it's a winter training frame, that's what I bought it for etc...

Do you really need to worry about corrosion starting inside the frame (with an alloy frame)?

I don't mind replacing drivetrain components in the spring, but don't like the thought of doing damage to the frame.

    From link -

    "

Mudguards are probably the most important winter accessory. They’ll prolong the life of your bike, components, and in particular your chain, not to mention improve your comfort.

That's what I figured...I have full mudguards so figured I'm 90% of the way there.

    Winter - keep it simples

    1 gear

1 brake - fixed wheel gives superb control on ice as less likely to lock the wheel & skid.

    Mudguards

    Enclosed/oil bath chaincase

Dark this morning sitting in my back porch eating my porridge but not quite as cold as the other day. Since I bought the spiked tyre the winters have been warmer.

My cycling buddy has declined to buy his bus pass but no longer will I know he will be sitting there to swap tales from the road getting us through the dark days.

Still after a decent pair of waterproof trousers. The gore ones I have bought twice but then either not arrived or been the wrong trousers.

Chilly morning today so full late autumn kit - but the Innocent Tunnel was like a sauna. My glasses fogged up and I were reet warm by the end.
