"for some reason I put a light jacket on top of my t-shirt this morning. sauna-like"

Is the current spell of warm (once the sun is up), still, dry weather remotely normal for Ed??

Don't know about 'normal', but it relates to gulf stream being so far north, while all summer it was south.

In Newfoundland, September's been warmer than July (statistically, not just anecdotally), although last week they also had the earliest recorded snow since the 40s.

Several years ago I spent the day with hired rowing boats on the canal, celebrating an October birthday with drinks and cake on the water. We were all in t-shirts and got quite sunburned. I was looking at a photograph from that day before I left the house this morning. It was very much like it is at the moment. Or how people tell me it is, as my work doesn't get natural light...

  5. About 13 years ago, on 10th October, I was playing cricket on a beach up on the Dornoch Firth in a t-shirt and sweltering heat.

I was browsing through my Strava activities in an idle moment the other day, and I came across a commute home from *31st* October last year, which I'd named

Summer gear on Halloween - must be a first.

My Garmin recorded the temperature as 18 deg C, so I wasn't just making it up!

So... maybe not remotely normal, but far from unprecedented.

  7. A few years ago I sat in sweltering heat along at Cramond reading my Kindle after cycling there on the fixie on a mid-October flexiday off.

It was better weather than we'd had all summer that year, iirc!

Conversely, I remember sitting out behind the Waterfront Bar at the end of March in glorious, hot sunshine having a birthday drink. Ended up with sunburn.

    Funny old game, our weather!

My wife's birthday is in June, mine in October. Over the years we've frequently noticed that the weather on my birthday is much better than on hers. Maybe the gods just shine on me ;-)
