    I'd say its less of an addiction to oil, and more of a pattern of behaviour. Humanity arrives on a continent, eats all the tasty big animals, cuts down most of the trees, then starts on the hydrocarbons. All that changes down the centuries is that we are getting quicker at exploiting stuff, and there are far, far more of us doing it.

    Quite interesting programme.

    According to the way it was told, oil was 'just' for lighting - because whales were running out

    Electricity nearly killed oil industry. Cars saved it.

    Churchill had a lot to do with oil companies' 'influence' in Middle East.

    Suez Canal checked Rockefeller's 'world domination' (success based on dubious monopolistic practices in US).
