Whilst I'm waiting to hear from either the royal family of Denmark or the Netherlands (ideally) for credibility, I would like to nominatee the first candidate for the inaugural 'no bell' prize for inconsiderate overtaking.

On several occasions recently I have been overtaken at great speed by a man on a Whyte 729 MTB whilst heading out of town on the canal towpath in the morning. Is a bell ring or an "on your right" too much to ask for?

My second nomination is the bloke who passed me abruptly this morning on the towpath at Wester Hailes on an orange mountain bike, the tyres of which were making just enough noise to warn me of his presence as he began to overtake. I queried "no bell?" as he passed by and followed up with "no communication?" due to a lack of response. I suspect that he had headphones in under his balaclava. I decided to keep up with him and rang my bell to attempt to warn the pedestrians that he was overtaking until he turned off across the grass... He did at least shoulder check.

That, um, rings a bell, if you pardon the expression. I think I've been overtaken without warning several times by orange bike man.

There should probably be a sub-category prize for the location most obviously likely to bring the overtaker into conflict.

Get two panniers, one on either side, usually means overtaking at straight bits, also works for cars sometimes. Obviously not if the person is a wanger.

I have swapped to my summer panniers, two cheap ones from EBC. Too many pockets and can never find the thing I need first time but wider footprint. Seems to help.

Orange bike man has now usurped Whyte 729 bike man (who I haven't spotted yet this year) as the main candidate for this award by overtaking me silently again this morning (he seemingly heard me asking "no bell?" as he passed this time, but didn't respond), before silently overtaking the cyclist ahead of me in what looked like a very dangerous manoeuvre given the narrowness of the path (just west of the Kingsknowe railway bridge), the positioning of the cyclist (towards the centre rather than the left) and the proximity of the built up side of the path which meant that there was only a rather narrow space in which to perform the overtake. Luckily it went ok and nobody came to grief, but it looked bad.

In his partial defence, orange bike man (he wears a luminous yellow backpack for further identification) was attempting to whistle to warn people before going under bridges this morning, albeit somewhat at the last minute given the speed he was going, but he didn't feel the need to do that to warn me or the other cyclist...

Shooed off path on the Musselburgh front by cyclist with referee style whistle.

Might take up my self to give an escape for my officious inner self
