We did a few walks over the half-term. On our first one, I found the Garmin Edge Touring Plus distance reported odd. So for the next two walks, we used both my Garmin Forerunner 210 and the Edge Touring plus. We've now uploaded both of them, and the Forerunner gives the distances as roughly twice what the Edge does - e.g. Ben Vrackie Ascent - 6.77km (even though it cut out owing to low battery before we were fully back), versus the Edge claiming 3.41km...

Walk highlands says the route we did is 9.5km / 6 miles

Oddly, both Edge and Forerunner show roughly the same route on the map, although the Forerunner says we were out/moving for 4 hours, versus the Edge saying 51 mins (which is clearly rubbish)

Is there a problem using the edge not on a bike? do you really need separate 'hiking' GPS units to work properly? Or is there something else going on?

A quick google suggests make sure "auto pause" is disabled on the Edge. Otherwise a lot of the time it will think you're stopped and not record.

hmmm....your powers of google are clearly more effective than ours.

many thanks for the quick solution - CCE never fails...

    It might yet not work!

My only experience of Garmins is old eTrex units that were designed for hillwalking. Slow, cantakerous, impenetrable UI, dreadful software but actually very reliable, accurate and rugged!

I'd agree it's probably the auto-pause. Since GPS isn't very accurate, at low speeds the unit will often just be guessing if you're moving or not. It should have a setting for sampling once every second, or similar.

I've still got an eTrex Vista which is my mountain zero-visibility backup. The interface is indeed untroubled by concepts such as 'user experience' but once you were familiar with them, they were (still are) seriously good devices. Annoyingly it chews a pair of AA Duracells in 5 hours so it stays off unless needed.

My old Garmin would sometimes go into autopause when I was cycling up hill. Never good motivation... (or maybe it was!)

Yes, it's the auto-pause. I've experienced the same on my Edge Touring Plus.

Oh, and Ben Vrackie is a very nice hill. Apparently there used to be a herd of goats near the top that would come and steal your lunch, but I've never seen them.
