"Go back 20 or 30 years and the Grassmarket was a nice, quiet place to come and live in. It’s no longer the nice, quiet place it used to be. Residents are saying they are fed up.”

    I blame the hen parties.

Previously the concerns were about 'down and outs' and 'homeless hostels".

When I were a nipper in 1987 which is 28 years ago now, the grass market was lively, you could buy buttons and wholemeal loaf at Helios fountain then go up to mammas for pizza but be told to go next door to the beehive and come back later when table would be ready. Always noisy.

Spotted what might be either a train or an ice skating rink in a circular lap style complete with bridges for going over and into the pub being built in St. Andrews sq gardens. Magical

I lived there for the period between 20 and 30 years ago, and it definitely wasn't quiet! Noise came from traffic using the now mainly pedestrianised cobbled section, singing(!), fights, the periodic visits from Ian Paisley to the Covenanters memorial (psalm singing), and the regular Orange and Green marches that ended in the Grassmarket, often dramatically. Different kind of noise to today probably, but not quiet.

When I moved the Edinburgh around 30 years, the Grassmarket certainly wasn't a quiet place, and actually I think the pubs were actually open later (but that might just be bad memory)

@gembo - it's a circular ice skating rink. There is a train doing a circuit of the bottom of Princes Street Gardens (as previous years)

Thanks chrisfl, I saw stuff for a rink but I also saw stuff that looked like rail track

I do wonder at people who move to the inner city and then complain that it's noisy. Noise is in the nature of inner cities and something that makes them attractive.

Similarly I can't fathom people who move above a pub and then complain that there's music, to the point that about half the live music in Edinburgh has been banned and it's become difficult for local musos to get gigs. Noise and liveliness are part of a city. If you want to live somewhere quiet, go to the suburbs.

When these folk travel to Barcelona, say, do they like them to be peopleless and happeningless in the evenings?
