Is this Facebook account official? This out of the blue festive reminder about the £50 pavement cycling fine seems straight out of the past.

How about some 'don't make dangerous passes on vulnerable road users' and 'look before pulling out of junctions'.

Edinburgh West police have just tweeted it.

I replied, asking if there will be a similar tweet about pavement parking, speeding, mobile phone use....

Transport minister Derek Mackay pledged new legislation to ensure footpaths are kept clear for buggies and wheelchairs if the SNP is returned to power after next May's Holyrood election.

I've asked them if it's an official account. I don't expect they'll respond. After all getting them to respond to real issues is hard enough.

All the Edinburgh police twitter accounts have published the same photo, so I assume the Facebook account is official.

The only way you can interact with the police is to make specific complaints. Make sure it's recorded and you're given a reference number.

At the moment, when asked about a specific issues, they can simple respond "we have had no complaints on the issue"

So does that mean we should have a national - 'Report mobile phone use to polis'.

How many do you think we'll need to specifically identify before they do something about it?

Spotted 4 drivers also using mobiles as I navigated Gogar roundabout tonight...

Although I spoilt it by going on the pavement up Maybury Rd as there isn't any cycle provision...

I find that in a queue of traffic at lights the first car never moves anymore when the light turns green because the driver is on the phone

I've been paying attention in London recently to driverist behaviour at traffic lights. It is now absolutely routine practice that when you have a queue of moving cars approaching lights which change from green, that the first car goes through on amber (despite being able to stop), followed by two more cars that accelerate and go through on red.

@ih Sadly that seems to be becoming more frequent in Edinburgh too.

Perhaps there should be rising bollards which pop up instantly at the white line the split second the light changes to red. I reckon that would encourage people to brake on amber, as they should. Ah, we can dream.

Not just the UK either. Google program their cars to pause for the first second of a green light so that they won't be shunted by RLJs.

Indeed this seems ultra common now with the first car possibly arguing that they were in continuous traffic and the next two obviously entitled to follow the car ahead. They should change the meanings so that amber means still green, then red is first red or as we understand it Amber, second red still Amber and finally really really red sorry means stop, it is just that there are cars coming the other way. You do see some wild cyclists going through on red but we are mostly anticipators of a change. E.g I cross Lothian road from red ASL box when the forever green man stops and just before the green comes on once I have established the cars on Lothian road have stopped to allow the peds to cross. This lets me cross without the cars trying to take me out and sometimes I get as far as the car parked outside the kebab shop pushes me back into the traffic. Road at next lights also very bumpy

Instead of bollards I'd suggest a dropping section of road, timed to start dropping when green turns to amber, so if you are just crossing at the change no great problem, but leave it later and you get a trench that your wheels drop in to with increasing ferocity until the 'red' position when the line can be crossed as low speed (for example if the system or signals fail) but most uncomfortable to drive through at any speed.

Unlike bollards any detained vehicle can be moved at low speed, clear of the road block, and 'released' properly by the road rising up.

Need to borrow Charlize theron's lorry from mad max fury road, that would sort these infringements out.

I have seen the bus gate bollards part of that before and thought that bit at least was in the UK?

Wow, that last one when the car went airborne!

It's interesting to note how sturdy all these bollards are compared to the ones that I regularly see lying flat around Edinburgh. It is possible to create sturdy car-proof barriers if you want to.

@dougal There's a clip somewhere (either a manufacturer's demo or from one of those destruction/testing shows) showing someone catapulting a large truck into a retractable bollard at some speed, after which the (dented) bollard can still be raised and lowered.
