It's it time that Edinburgh had a Ciclovía?

More and more cities around the world are holding Ciclovía events, closing sections of the city to motor traffic for day (or more) to allow the citizens to have their city back.

Therefore I propose the motion: It really is time that Edinburgh had it's own Ciclovía, and the idea place for it would be Lothian road.

    Any thoughts?

What's not to like? Every Sunday 7a.m to 2p.m. In bogota. Also on holidays makes sense the traffic is lightest at this time?

Car free days was definitely one of the things that got a strong endorsement at the Women's Cycle Forum event last month. I seem to remember Lesley Hinds seemed fairly keen on the idea (as long as Alison Johnstone didn't claim credit for it...). So perhaps worth following that up?

Bristol has been doing a monthly Summer Streets-type event for a couple of years now. It's not marketed as a cycling thing specifically, which might help. They did a big waterslide, for instance, which was a huge hit. One of those down the Mound??

How about George IV Bridge rather than Lothian Road? Just thinking of the number of buses that use Lothian Road, and I can't think of a practical alternative route for them.

If you include Chambers Street and the Royal Mile then it would be a big area with some interesting attractions on it (Museum, for example) and an interesting street in its own right.

POP has shown you can close a fair chunk of central Edinburgh (and on a Saturday too) without gridlock...

This would be great! In the spring (the first time) when the weather is - hopefully - better I assume?

I happened to be in Belgrade a few years ago during a car free Sunday. Blissful.

Think it's a few times a year there.
