runs furniture art shop in morningside; blanking on what it's called. would be interesting to see how vote broke down within the constituency. when i saw his first leaflet,i thought it was perfectly targetted at our demographic.

The machinations of the d'Hondt system didn't really help Labour overall in the Lothians. By winning in Southern they effectively bump themselves a seat off the list (Sarah Boyack in this case). Likewise in Fife, Willie Rennie won North East Fife (Ming's old stomping ground) at the expense of his own former list position. The Tories on the other hand seem to be the ones "breaking" the system, picking up Edinburgh Central and also an extra list spot thanks to an overall increase in their list vote across the region.

The Lib Dems couldn't repeat this sort of thing as it looks like the've done very well in Edinburgh Western but everywhere else across Edinburgh and the Lothians their vote is doing even worse than either 2011 or 2015.

The overall story across the Edinburgh constituency votes doesn't necessarily reflect how the seats are won/allocated, given what appears to be a focussing of Labour and Liberal Democrat votes in Southern and Western respectively. The SNP have lost 3 seats in Edinburgh yet they got 20% more votes than 2011! The Liberal Democrats got 16% less and Labour 5% less votes than they did 2011 and the Tories got 58% more! What the SNP appears to have come up against in Western, Central and Southern is a strong "anyone but the SNP" voting bloc putting an X in the box of what they see as the most likely candidate to beat them.

Been some tears shed on Twitter that Alison Johnston standing in Edinburgh central cost the SNP the seat, however Alison Dickie actually got an increased vote compared to Marco Biagi in 2011 - the Greens weren't really eating into the SNP vote, it was quite probably coming from Labour and the Lib Dems just as much and the Tories appear to have got a hugely increased vote at the expense of Labour and the Lib Dems. And it all rather overlooks the fact that she's been a hard working and popular list MSP and well deserves the votes she got!

Oh well, sounds like a positive thing that Daniel Johnson got in if he is pro cycling.

Just a pity to lose someone decent (Eadie) in the party in power.

    EDIT!!!

Quote below about AJ not RD, sorry!

"And it all rather overlooks the fact that she's been a hard working and popular list MSP and well deserves the votes she got!"

I'm still surprised she chose to stand in EC, must have been 'safer' seats she could have had.

Clearly her high profile attracted votes. Not only has she defeated the SNP (Marco Biagi might have held on if he'd stood again), but now represents an area with a Labour past - inc Robin Cook.

Looks like I was possibly right about the waste of time SNP twice was in terms of winning more seats then? As I felt SNP would win all constituency seats but then despite having massive share of the vote in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, no regional seats.

I take no comfort in this. But I do ask my good friends who voted SNP twice why they did not consider RISE or Green?

RISE got nowt is that right?

Turnout below 60 per cent is that right?

Indeed it was. My quick appraisal of Ruth Davidson would have been more along the lines of "shallow opportunist windbag".

Daniel Johnson phoned me when he was trying to be leader of Scottish labour. Not a minion, he phoned me, I voted for Neil Findlay. But I remember that DJ phoned me. His office was in the old bit of studio one that they closed cause folk were coming in for advice then buying the stuff of Internet.

@kaputnik, that is a very kind appraisal of Ruth Davidson. You missed out self confessed Kim Yung Il lookalike.

The SNP are creeping up towards 65. It is a minor part of their complete victory, they can govern as biggest minority as they have the mandate for sure.

Jeremy Balfour an MSP. That should get him and his anti-Roseburn to Leith stance out of the Council. Any chance Jim Eadie would stand for the Council? He's the one SNP person I'm sorry to see go.

"But I do ask my good friends who voted SNP twice why they did not consider RISE or Green?"

I'm sure you'll get a range of answers.

As has already been discussed on here, people are clearly free to vote for X twice (wasn't just the SNP calling for it).

I suspect there will be years of academic analysis of 'what if'.

Whether the SNP really believed that voting for them twice would give them more seats is unclear. I think in some regions probably, others almost certainly not.

On one hand it's reasonable to think some SNP voters would/should (and did) vote for either of the two parties in favour of independence - but individual voters will have decided they don't like their policies enough. There must be people who voted SNP and also for one of the pro-union parties.

There will be criticism of the voting system from all sides, but generally it works as intended, though many people still don't entirely understand it.

Whether individuals or parties misrepresented (wilfully or through ignorance) how it works is another issue!

There was a power cut at my place about 6am. Very frustrating for following the results.

I just mean arithmetically vote SNP twice failed. Lots of votes, no seats. As seemed obvious to me beforehand but not the woman at my work who questioned my arithmetic

"I just mean arithmetically vote SNP twice failed. Lots of votes, no seats."

Yes but, it depends on how constituencies went.

Might have been 'easy' to predict Glasgow going all SNP, but you'd have got good odds at the bookies if you'd wanted to bet on Edinburgh having Lab, Tory, LD MSPs.

    I've got a Tory MSP! I wasn't expecting that...
(Here endeth my contribution to this thread.)

  24. Am I right that only Scotland North East list is still undeclared? As SNP got all constituencies except one there, they likely won't get list seats, so no majority?

    TOP PRIORITY

Giving Ruth Davidson a cycle tour of her constituency.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  29. So, no SNP majority! That could be good for active travel as potential coalition partners or supporters of a minority government could get some commitment for active travel from them, if the topic is high enough on their priorities (which it is for the Greens for example).
