Hooray!
Interesting that the other three councillors are all incumbents.

I don't know anything about the SNP candidate who lost, but he pout cycling and active travel prominently in his leaflet.

Conservatives making big gains in Midlothian, it seems. Ian Baxter (Green, Bonnyrigg) has lost his seat too.
Posted 7 years ago # -
That means Sandy Howat (ex-SNP group leader - has lost his seat).

Indeed. Feeling quite bad, as I'd offered to help him canvass but didn't get around to following up as I spent more time on PoP. Doesn't look like he was even a close fourth, though.

That's Chas Booth and Adam McVey both re-elected.Posted 7 years ago # -
Leith's turnout went 32.6 -> 44%
This is a very good thing (tm)

@Frenchy, maybe next time. There seems to be a bit of a Brexit effect on the local elections this year. I suppose that's what many (not all) voters have on their minds...

Tory for Labour in F/C hardly good news. Not really surprised — was at Craiglockhart Church for the last shift of the day and the steady stream of voters even at 9pm was a clue. The number of people there driving Big Cars to the poll was insane. And if they get this much without visible campaigning (that I saw) this doesn't bode well for June.

A very good result for Chas Booth in Leith: second place.

"The number of people there driving Big Cars to the poll was insane."
That reminds me of IndyRef. All these older male voters in tweed jackets I'd never seen before (presumably because they usually pass me in their cars).

Morningside ward 10

Really quite troubling - and baffling - to see some of the wards that are returning Tories.
Posted 7 years ago # -
The EEN's line that the 'council is bad/wrong' is never challenged. no surprise that people believe it and then vote for those seen as 'outsiders'.

It's not really accurate to put vote counts against candidates
They either made the quota at one point in the shakedown, or were the last man standing.

"It's not really accurate to put vote counts against candidates"
Just indicates first preference votes. As we can see, some candidates "come from behind" due to second preferences going their way: that's rare, but does happen, see Sighthill/Gorgie result.
What seems to be true is that in a four seat ward, you need roughly 20% of the first preferences to be sure of being elected in the first round. If you're below that, you are at the mercy of the second preferences of those who preferred other parties.
