There is a certain irony about Grangemouth being one of the first areas to feel the full force of rising sea levels.

That next generation will hopefully be the ones who will help us tackle climate change, produce enough food to make sure everyone has enough to eat and help us beat diseases like cancer and Alzheimer's. They may also explain the origin of the Universe itself.

And we might also be tackling the matter of the Scottish Government’s massive roads budget, at a time when new road construction should be ending, in favour of a massive transfer of funds to active and public transport. Essentially, the Scottish Government talks a magnificent game on climate change, and has some excellent policies and targets in place. But in these three key areas, and more, it still often fails to join the dots between principle, policy and practice.

Sea level rise in 2050.
You can play with the map and assumptions...
Grangemouth might be shutting down, all of its own accord.

“You can play with the map and assumptions”
Except that changing the date to 2030 or 2100 makes little difference.
Says my house will be underwater - which is isn’t correct.

There we were two weeks ago at Rose Bay on the water’s edge, waiting for a private boat to take us to a harbourside mansion for a wine tasting. It was one of those days when Sydney’s air quality was among the worst in the world. The boat emerged from the pea soup gloom with the words “VIP” on the side...
...Later there was a wine tasting where we gathered around to swirl and spit. Every varietal had notes of bushfire

And Australia wants to mine more coal?!
Of course Australia, India and all points firth of Europe are the trading deal targets for the Britannia Unleashed fantasy.
Considering parts of the world are suffering extreme events I am more than ever convinced we need to concentrate on alliances here.
Wasn't that long ago you would have heard of aid being offered to our Australian friends but now it's 'my country comes first'.
It must be incredibly traumatic for society there and a substantial number of Australians are dead against mining, Murdoch and the fossil fuel interests.Posted 5 years ago # -
"Water shortage and low rivers in Australia due to unrestricted fracking. Rain is not main factor in maintaining river levels on this continent." (paraphrased)
I checked and it seems Perth is having to get desalination plants as the aquifers are down by up to 30%. Video suggests water being taken illegally and kept in private reservoirs as fracking needs huge amounts. Meanwhile adjoining rivers are as dry as they have ever been. Knock on effect to elsewhere. Compulsive viewing - claims business and some politicians just look at country as mineral resource. Fires allow them to move people for their own safety.
Whatever the truth you can sense that climate change will have unintended consequences as people look for explanations.Posted 5 years ago # -
If I am not wrong, a lot of the water in places like Perth & the outback comes from “fossilised” water stores - irreplaceable water that’s been trapped for millions of years.
To get water, you dig a hole in the ground (a bore). When that runs dry, you dig the hole a bit deeper. When you can’t dig any further, the water store is exhausted, forever.
Completely unsustainable (as is desalination)

“But they’re manufactured tremendous if you’re into this, tremendous fumes. Gases are spewing into the atmosphere. You know we have a world, right? So the world is tiny compared to the universe. So tremendous, tremendous amount of fumes and everything.

Climate change, Lord Williams said, is 'not a problem coming from outside. It's everyone's problem, everybody's issue.
'It's also not something legislation alone can cure.' Lord Williams spoke out about the 'sinister feeling that this must be some kind of conspiracy'.
The belief that 'climate change has been invented by communists, illuminati or some sort of other mysterious group who are determined to undermine who were are. That's something I worry about,' he said.

Maybe, maybe not -
(From above - “ A storm is certainly brewing. The science is clear on that. The question now is how we face it.”)
What did you not/imagine in 1990??
(Just a reminder)
“
Despite several major economies showing quarterly detraction during 1989, the British economy continued to grow until the third quarter of 1990. Economic growth was not re-established until early 1993, with the end of the recession being officially declared on 26 April that year, but the Conservative government which had been in power continuously since 1979 managed to achieve re-election in April 1992 after the replacement of long-serving Margaret Thatcher with John Major as prime minister in November 1990 helped fend off a strong challenge from Neil Kinnock and Labour.

Prince William said: “The earth is at a tipping point and we face a stark choice: either we continue as we are and irreparably damage our planet or we remember our unique power as human beings and our continual ability to lead, innovate and problem-solve.

The anti-M77 protest saw some of the first school strikes. Because the protestors didn't come from a wealthier background the press at the time ridiculed them.
Gaelic TV covering an important part of environmental action back in the bad old days when the Tories ruled Scotland (!)
(Now of course some media outlets talk about a 'disobedient Scotland' but that's maybe always been the case? Could a disobedient England ever exist in the union? :-))
GalGael project was one of the inspiring things to come out of this time after Pollok Park was motorised.https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000ct1t/birdman-of-pollokcuraidh-na-coille
