    Well, some weeks have
passed now, the cables have been laid and the contractors have left some dangerous, poorly filled-in trenches across the path between Ainslie Park and Granton Road.
Although some purple ducting, barriers and signs remain beside the path the contractors appear to have moved on. I have contacted The Council via online I've had no feedback surpise surprise. I also phone the Clarence number but was politely advised to call the main contractor myself to complain(0845 number)!! Surely it's up to The Council to control their contractors? If any cyclist was to fall and be seriously injured as a result of these poorly rein stated works then who is to blame? I suggest it's The Council who are responsible for state of roads and pavements ultimately, even when it's due to slap-dash contractors.

Are these the same people who are doing cable works on Crewe Road South? Core communications or something. They've left a terrible strip across the side road (Kimmerghame Something) with lots of loose stones and uneven surface. I'd guess that it's temporary, but I fear that I'm wrong.

@EdinCore. They responded to one tweet and repaired two of their earlier trenches above Crewe Road South but have since clammed-up and not reinstated anything else.

@north_team have noticed, so I'll send them some GPS-tagged pictures of the offending locations. @EdinCore silent.

The company doing the work around the red bridge down to Granton road are C-Plan based at Broxburn.
They can be contact on info@c-plan.net
I first contacted them on 24th Feb about the appalling state the access to Boswall Place had been left in, and got an immediate reply see below

    Good afternoon,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention as I was under the impression that all the reinstatement work had been completed on the cycle path. I will ensure that our
Tarmac crew will be on site first thing tomorrow to complete this work.

I will let you know when this has been completed.

    Regards

The fact that he was under the impression that the work had been completed was quite worrying but he promised to get it sorted, which they did, but not first thing but in the afternoon.

I then e-mailed on the 3rd March him to let him know that there were other parts of the work done on the path that weren't up to the same standard as they had shown they were capable of, and included photos to help identify where and what state of disrepair.
Alas I have had no reply.
The company are sub-contractors for Virgin who are installing the cable as part of their network, does anyone have contact details for Richard Branson? I'm sure they would like to know who is besmirching their good name with sloppy workmanship.

  6. There's a particularly nasty little 1 to 2" deep edge on the trench by the Granton Road bridge, which I just spotted at the last second last night. The trench is at an angle and someone's going to have a nasty off at some point when they hit it.

Not to mention the odd roadworks signs they've just abandoned in the verges the length of their 'work'.

I thought the council weren't allowing any work to be completed without inspection these days, or does that not apply to shared paths?

I imagine the EEN would be overjoyed with a tip-off about the council paying shoddy contractors who do botch-jobs, especially where they have the double-whammy of a story involving cyclepaths (so they can allow their ranters to mouth off at freeloading cyclists & rack up the page hits for their advertisers)!

I've just emailed c-plan about the Crewe Road South works too. Not up to standard.
"we pride ourselves on delivering a professional service that provides both quality and value for our clients." (From their website). Hah.

    Welcome Pawl.

    Interesting.

Sub contractors of sub-contractors of subcontractors - often leads to substandard work!

CEC (North Team) don't seem to be as interested in this as I would have thought (they generally have a good record of responding to 'issues' on NEPN).

Try R. Branson c/o Necker Island though it never seems entirely clear which Virgin branded companies are actually legally his.

Virgin Media pay for the use of the brand. Not one of Branson's, iirc.

Chap from C-Plan has replied back to say that the Crewe Road South works are only temporary, and will be filled in to the proper standard once the works are complete.

What a contrast to the work that Virgin Media carried out on Shandwick Place on Saturday - contractors did textbook job, albeit to a spec which is not as robust as it could be for that heavily impacted site.

Indeed. The bearded one has a 51% stake in West Coast Virgin Railways (Stagecoach the rest), but only 10% in the East Coast flavour, again Stagecoach having the rest.

Presumably those using the brand have a contract that involves not bringing the brand into disrepute.

Lot of cable has gone down on WoL path twixt Juni green and Balerno. The job has been done quickly and filled in well. The surface is not Tarmac of course

Just wondering if anyone knows whether the contractor is coming back to fill/surface the trenches properly. Really substandard and dangerously unfinished.

Nothing yet. Nothing back from Edinburgh Core since they said they needed precise locations of the offending trenches (which they had been sent, in the form of geotagged pictures) in order to establish if they were theirs. I'll chase and see if they want to be spoon-fed a map.

I posted some further info last week in the other thread

CityFibre are responsible for the works and their project supervisor told me that they were going to get everything tidied up when they had completed the final connection to Granton Road. They were there last week digging up and re-laying the steps but no sign yet that they are sorting the previous trenches.

This morning there was a road sweeper doing a great job spreading the muddy verge all over the path.

Cycled past C-plan workers at Granton road steps on the NEPN this morning as they were starting to put a proper surface on the trench there. I asked if they were going to do the other two bad bits, and they said they were so I gave them directions to the bits that needed surfacing. I'll check they've been done this evening.

At last! Two months after the work started the path has now been properly reinstated. I know a few folk from here chased this and while I don't know if that made a difference to the work schedule or standard, at least they know that people expect proper reinstatement and will keep pressing until it's done.
Now to get the perma-ponding sorted out...

    Posted 8 years ago #
  22. Looking forward to experiencing the proper reinstatements on my way home tonight.

Not sure the ponding will ever be resolved; there was work done on the NEPN near Craigleith a year or two back to sort out the drainage and resolve the ponding there. It's still as bad as ever!

    Posted 8 years ago #
  23. Yep - definite improvement!

Some serious pooling and massive puddles on the NEPN between Roseburn and Leith though. Can't remember seeing them that bad in years!

And the surface around the Boswall Parkway exit is getting to be really atrocious. The puddles were hiding some nasty holes and ruts, which you'd only know we're there if you know the path well. Some poor sod will come a cropper there on a wet day.

  24. Noticed last night that they've still missed a bit that needs proper re-instatement - it's just before you go under the bridge over the path at Pilton Drive (heading Leithwards from the Red Bridge)...

Yes,threefromleith, the badly filled-in trench in question is a late addition. the previous trenches had eventually bee filled in well but that new one was dug later, after all the other ones (an afterthought?)and hopefully they'll come back to sort it properly.

    Posted 7 years ago #
  26. I suspect they'll 'forget' about it unless someone reminds them.

Can anyone post any handy contact details (email addresses / names of staff you've previously spoken to)?
