Great plan gembo, date suits me.
Although if anyone fancies an earlier recce at Easter weekend then I'd be up for that as well.

Ten four on the 16/4.

In my diary. Can't promise more right now.
Might do a recce and see what sort of a pace the 5yo can muster.

Unfortunately I have an appointment at the bank that day, which I already had to move once when I realised that it clashed with PoP. Meeting at the destination and then cycling back with everyone and a flock of kingfishers in tow might just be feasible.

I ended up cycling along to the aqueduct over the River Almond with my girlfriend this afternoon as we had planned a cycle ride but didn't fancy anything demanding. It was nice to cycle out beyond Hermiston House Road bridge for a change. It's still very gravely but it was a nice day for it.

Early(ish) depart on the 16th will work for us; there's no way I can get an under-2 to comply with a full day adventure, but we can certainly do a few hours before heading home for a 1PMish naptime.

Hmm. Largest child has stuff on Saturday mornings, so could bring the smallest one, which could sleep on the way back.

"no way I can get an under-2 to comply with a full day adventure"
Indeed.
No compulsion to 'join convoy on way out' or 'wait 'til everyone is ready to leave'.

It would be a crown of kingfishers just to correct myself.

@wingpig
I'll get onto the Alba Chruthachail straight away.

Mrs Stickman and I had a leisurely pootle along the towpath to Ratho this afternoon. Very pleasant, if a little chilly. Had a coffee at the Bridge Inn - disappointingly no cake, but we had some shortbread and tablet. Bike parking there is poor - some rusty wheelbenders.

Such a nice day that Biketrain & I will be shepherding the little ones along the towpath this afternoon.
Watch out for us & say hi if you pass (we won't be fast).

Lovely afternoon trip along the towpath. As promised, lovely new tarmac from Hermiston to Ratho but still with loose chips on top.
Thanks to Stickman ' s recce we pushed on past the Bridge Inn and headed for the climbing centre which did have cake :-)
Could look at the new 'Clip & Climb' zone that opened today. Looks really good - very bright & colourful challenges. It has an auto belay so you can climb independently.
We've booked in to give it a go next weekend.
Top marks to Scottish Canals for the resurfacing, which also widen the path.
They could do with some canal level bike parking at the climbing centre though - not everyone can push/carry their bike up the steps.
I could have done with a turning space as I had added the trailer to the back of my rig to transport the kids' bike to the canal which made turning round a challenge...
Turning problems

I was going to ask about getting to the climbing centre. Is the stairway up the only access from the canal? We've walked up there before but never gone with bikes. Some sort of floating pontoon bike parking would be cool.
Posted 9 years ago # -
Yes the stairway is the only access point. It has a wide edge that you can push a bike up, as I did yesterday. The path is too tight for anything else. The road from the climbing centre's own road (had to build their own road and indeed their own bridge over the canal? Feel sorry for the guy, did all that and never got the return), anyway the main road up to wilkieston has a pavement / cycle path. The top road out of Ratho connects with this road. It is quiet and wide but some people drive like maniacs.

Hi, is this still on on Sat? I might come along with the stoker, what time are you thinking of setting off at?
Posted 9 years ago # -
I think we said 10.30 a.m at h lochrin basin. I cycle in all weather but not much fun if chucking it down. I will check forecast
Posted 9 years ago # -
Forecast looks ok, Ratho has sunshine symbols all morning, and stRts WSW then turns NW then North. Chilly.
Posted 9 years ago # -
Sadly, I won't make this. Have fun!

I might be able to join in but would join in where the canal passes Cutlins Road. Would anyone dare to make a guess of average travel speeds?
Posted 9 years ago # -
Afraid I can't make this pathwarming party now either. I was looking forward to it. Weather looks hopeful though.

"Would anyone dare to make a guess of average travel speeds?"
6mph

10:30 at Lochrin should be fine for both me and the navigator. Unless it's tipping it down, in which case it's probably not suitable for him.
Posted 9 years ago # -
if we're able to come, we'll probably start after 11. but, i'm aiming to be on the towpath near harrison park with leaflets 10-11, so maybe see you then.

I had to nip to FedEx at Ratho Station at lunchtime, and decided to draw a loop by carrying on to Ratho, coming back to the Gyle along the canal. New path is a little scrunchy, but not wheel-fiddlingly deep at any points.

I might not make it after all, even late, now I remember that I should be attending the Edinburgh Community Solar Co-operative AGM in the early afternoon after my banking appointment in the morning, but I may bump into the group heading back into town depending when it finishes...
