A raging argument has beset the SRD - Mr SRd household, pitting the senior family members against the junior.

The first three Star Wars movies in the 1970s were episodes 4,5 and 6, the ones that came out after this, darth moll etc were episodes 1,2 and 3.

I saw Spytfyre the other day but the only classic film series he mentioned was Indiana Jones.

I am not a number. I am an independent non-canon film!

(also, all polls should have 'Beer' as an option)

It has to be four. The 'canon' set up in Phantom Menace, attack of the clones and the other one doesn't fit with the rest of the established SW-universe.

If Disney can claim all the Extended universe fiction is 'Legends' and no longer canon, I can claim PM et al is 'Nonsense' and never happened.

Sorry, no matter how [forum rules apply] the three prequels were you have to count them.. :-/

The real fan's canon, and this is objective fact presented as objective fact, is that the order begins and ends thusly:

    Star Wars
    Star Wars Holiday Special
    Empire Strikes Back
    Return of the Jedi
    Force Awakens

    Piffle.

    Midichlorians? Nope.

All Jedi looking like Ben Kenobi while was in hiding? Nopenope

C3P0 being made by Darth Vader and never mentioning it once? NopeNope Nopeity nope nope.

    I am counting nothing.

I have the benefit of never having seen any of the supposed prequels.

But I am not 'just' making a point. It simply does not make sense to call 1-3 anything else (and certainly not 4-6). So when my kids talk about 4, I always have to say 'which 4? My 4 or your 4'. Hence the argument.

    Might I suggest the following:

    A, B, C; 1, 2, 3; G4, H5, I6

  17. Episodes IV - VI were Episodes IV - VI before Episodes I - III graced us with their unwelcome presence. Therefore The Force Awakens is Episode VII. Though it's the fourth 'proper' Star Wars movie (even if it was almost a carbon copy of A New Hope).

So it's both 4 and VII...

According to Wikipedia Star Wars wasn't called 'episode IV: 'a new hope' until 1981, so I stand by my position.

Well I have no need to be right nor do I care what number it is? I just checked with George Lucas and he said 7. Also the seventh film made if that helps?

"According to Wikipedia Star Wars wasn't called 'episode IV: 'a new hope' until 1981, so I stand by my position."

The trailers for the 1977 film weren't set to John Williams music but that doesn't mean they were correct in doing so. It's all they knew at the time. If Irving Kershner calls Empire Episode V then it makes TFA Episode VII.

If it's any help the opening crawl of TFA says "Episode VII" at the top.

Other curious film opinions include that one espoused by people who put Temple of Doom at the top.

Yeahbut. Wikipedia makes it clear that the only reason it wasn't done was because it was felt by the studio that it would confuse people. Lucas always intended it to be 'episode 4' whether or not the prequels were ever actually made. The addition to the opening crawl of the title episode 4 was made long before the prequels ever happened.

@srd, what will it take to convince you that you are wrong in this hugely important issue? Sometimes it is the way you can back down in a family argument that defines the dynamic, this can be more important than winning?

Episode VII, the seventh Star Wars film made, called Star Wars seven by George Lucas - I'm begining to see a trend here.

Surely the key issue in all of this is why does Kylo Ren stop wearing his helmet? So irresponsible...

He was wearing all-black anyway so no amount of helmetry would save him in the court of tabloid commenter opinion.

@SRD, will you abide by the poll?

I heard way back in the early days when the first trio of films were being released that Lucas's grand plan was to make the first three, then 3 prequels, then 3 sequels. And that is what has happened/is happening.

It is undeniable that love them or loathe them, the Story of Darth Vadar, or TSODV as I will now be calling the second trio of films to be made, came in the storytelling chronology before The Story of Luke Skywalker (TSOLS). That makes the first film in the Story of Rey (TSOR) the seventh film in the storytelling chronology. It is also the seventh film to be made in the series. In fact I'm not sure where you got the number four from in the first place? It doesn't make any sense no matter how you look at it.

To create a shared terminology, I suggest the following

TSOLS can be also be known as LuSk 1 2 and 3.

TSODV can be known as DaVa 1 2 and 3 (and ignored if wished)

TSOR can simply be called Rey or (extrapolating into the future) ReSk 1 2 and 3.

  30. I suspect MrSRD is reading this thread with a wry smile...

On steveo's cat, the ST films are very very hit or miss, and seemingly random. At least with SW you know IV - VI are superb (even accounting for the Ewoks); I - III are undeniably hideously awful; VII was a return to form (though slightly underwhelming overall); so I suspect there will be three distinct groupings (which fits neatly with paulmilne's setup).

Indy? As a kid I loooooved Temple, but as an adult the constant screeching is wearing. Raiders is up there as one of the best movies ever made; Holy Grail is great fun; Crystal Skull sits somewhere with I - III (Jumping the Shark; Blowing up the Fridge; Flying the Artoo).

Love this thread, can't beat a bit of film geekery.
