I've signed up for this next month and wondered if anyone had taken part. If so, I wondered how 'serious' a ride it is - not in terms of the distance but the attitude of the participants. I'm not taken part in an event like this before and my target is simply to finish so I'm curious if I will be a lone straggler finishing hours after everyone else has gone home?

This is how I currently feel about Ride to the Sun! I know I can ride the distance - but I fear I'll be the slowcoach on the sturdy tourer left many miles behind 200 or so speedy men in their early 30s!

@unhurt. They aren't all speedy men in their early 30's. I've booked my train ticket and bike reservation for this, but I'm quite a bit more than early 30's and not speedy at all. Rather like AKen, my aim is to amuse myself and finish at a pace that suits me rather than race any whippets. We can be at the back together, and if you decide I'm too slow you can leave me behind and ride off at speed with the likes of @gembo and @Hankchief.

Which train-station would it be for this?

I've assumed Carlisle, but maybe I should have thought more deeply before making that assumption...

Ed1 - For the avoidance of doubt - Greenroofer is talking about Ride to the Sun overnight ride from Carlisle ro Cramond & not SkinnyTweed.
Greenroofer - I can't afford the train down so I'm going to have to pedal it ;-) so I might not be as fast as you fear.
Anyone else want to join me?

If anyone takes longer than me to finish Ride to the Sun I'll happily buy them a pint!
This will be my first ever 100 miler. I'm confident I'll do it. Eventually.

@Hankchief - what's the deal with the ride to the sun, when you leaving and how long is it?
Posted 8 years ago # -
website - it's 100miles each way.
The return leg from Carlisle has a fairly flexible start time of 8-10pm, with the chip shop in Moffat staying open to feed riders before tackling the Devil's Beef Tub.
I was thinking of a relatively relaxed trip down leaving around lunchtime...
BTW - Does this thread win a "Best Hijack" award with only 1 post on topic?

'Proper' thread here -

Hankchief, at the risk of drifting off the hijack topic, cb pointed out that SRD is capable of hijacking her threads on line 2 of the opening post:http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=15418#post-198302

oops, to the proper thread with me, much relieved by presence of other non-whippets! (I am trying to negotiate a lift down - if I can't find a suitable train with bike space - so possible a lift will be available. Details nearer the time.)
